The kitchen island is the centrepiece of your space. Whether your kitchen is small or spacious, this feature should be well-lit and practical. Installing pendant lights is the ideal way to enhance your kitchen island and elevate the overall design of the room. To achieve this, it’s essential to ensure harmony between the lighting fixtures and the island itself. Lumeers shares some practical tips to help you get it right.

Choose lighting fixtures to match your island’s style
To avoid overcrowding the room, opting for simple lamps in soft colours is the best solution. Glass is an elegant material that introduces a romantic touch to the space. Bell-shaped metal pendant lights are also an excellent choice. Both of these materials not only look great, but are also easy to clean and highly durable. These kinds of pendant lights are available in a wide range of finishes, making them easy to coordinate with islands in cement, concrete, marble, metal and more.

If your kitchen opens onto the living or dining area, a row of three drop-shaped pendant lights in tinted or clear glass is an understated yet striking choice. This style of lighting will add a touch of sophistication to your room. The choice of pendant lights should also take the overall kitchen décor into account. Try a coordinated palette or mix and match different colours—but avoid combining more than three tones. Looking for pendant lights that will perfectly suit the style and size of your central island? Lumeers offers a full range of kitchen lighting to help you achieve perfect harmony.
Choosing the right lighting intensity
The choice of kitchen pendant lights should reflect both the size of your space and how you use your worktop. If you use the island as a dining area, position your pendant lights 80 cm above the surface. This creates a softer, less direct illumination. You can also go for a pendant light with a dimmer switch. This is a particularly practical solution, as it lets you adjust the light output to suit the mood at any given moment.

It’s also important to consider the wattage of the lamps you select for your pendants. For general lighting, a warm white light of 3,000 kelvins is more than sufficient. However, if you tend to do a lot of prep work on your counter, consider a neutral white light, ideally between 4,000 and 4,500 kelvins, for better task lighting.
Height, size and alignment
The usual distance from floor to the bottom of a pendant light is 178 cm. To find the ideal hanging height, ask someone to stand on the opposite side of the island. If you are able to see each other clearly without the fixture obstructing your view, you’ve found the perfect height. The size of single pendant lights should match the proportions of the island and the maximum number of people likely to sit around it. The arrangement of pendants can be tailored to your taste and the shape of your kitchen island. For those keen on precision, pendant lights can be aligned either vertically or horizontally, with equal spacing between each one.
For example, if you want to install two simple industrial pendants, divide the island into three equal parts. If you choose three hanging lights, divide it into four. To ensure perfect positioning, the centre of each fixture’s electrical box should sit at the join of these imaginary segments. Also, make sure there’s at least 15.25 cm of space between the end of the light and the edge of the island. For a smaller island measuring between 1.5 and 2.5 metres, simply install two pendants to avoid visually overloading the space.
