Carafes : faites le bon choix

The carafe is the elegant touch that transforms tap water into an act of hospitality — showing your guests they deserve more than a plastic bottle on the table.

We often underestimate the impact of a beautiful carafe at the table. Yet it is one of the most visible elements during a meal: it is present from start to finish, passed around, held and poured. A generously shaped hand-blown glass carafe, a tinted glass carafe with a cork stopper, a crystal carafe whose facets catch the light — these pieces add to your table’s style just as much as plates or glasses do. Unlike plates and glasses, you need only one or two striking carafes to make an impression. At Lumeers, our collection covers every taste and occasion: clear or tinted glass water carafes, wine carafes and decanters, juice carafes, Nordic carafes with stoppers, carafes in recycled glass — ideal for every table and every event.

Water carafe, wine decanter, Nordic carafe: which one to choose?

The water carafe is an everyday essential. It elegantly replaces mineral water bottles on your table, instantly giving meals a more thoughtful feel. For filtered or tap water, a clear glass carafe holding 1–1.5 litres is perfect. Some models with lids or stoppers keep your water fresher for longer. Our recycled glass water carafes, with their subtle green tint and natural bubbles, are especially loved for their organic and inviting look.

The wine carafe — or decanter — serves a special purpose: letting wine breathe so aromas can develop and tannins soften. Its shape is designed to maximise contact between wine and air — hence the distinctive bulbous, duck-shaped, or amphora designs. For young, tannic wines (like Bordeaux, Syrah or Cabernet), 30–60 minutes in a decanter can transform a closed wine into something expressive. For older, delicate wines, use the decanter only briefly to separate wine from any sediment. A crystal wine carafe also makes a striking decorative feature on your sideboard or drinks trolley — even when empty.

The Nordic carafe with stopper — cylindrical and clean-lined, most often with a cork or glass stopper — has been the centrepiece of contemporary tables for the past decade. Its functional yet elegant design, often inspired by Scandinavian studios, suits water, juice or milk alike. It fits just as well on the dining table as in the fridge. Our tough borosilicate glass models move directly from fridge to table with ease.

Hand-blown glass, crystal or recycled glass carafes: which quality should you choose?

Mouth-blown glass carafes are generously shaped and gently unique — no two are ever the same. Their thicker walls give them a satisfying weight and surprising sturdiness for such delicate-looking pieces. Hand-wash to preserve their crafted detail.

Crystal is the premium choice for wine carafes. It offers unrivalled clarity, brilliance and that signature ring, bringing a sense of subtle luxury that standard glass can’t match. A well-cut crystal carafe refracts candlelight beautifully, making dinners feel extra special. Wash crystal by hand and dry immediately to avoid marks.

Recycled glass is the eco-friendly choice, with subtle green, amber or grey hues depending on the reused glass. Its natural colours and characterful imperfections give a warm, organic feel that suits modern homes focused on sustainability. Recycled glass carafes are sturdy, often dishwasher safe, and their individual details are part of their charm.

How to choose the right size carafe?

For a table of four, at least a one-litre carafe is recommended for water — or two litres for longer meals or hot days. For wine, a standard bottle is 75cl, so a carafe of 75cl to 1 litre is ideal for each bottle; for several bottles, choose a larger 1.5-litre carafe. Juice carafes are usually smaller — 50 to 75cl — as juice is served in smaller amounts. Whatever the size, look for a carafe with a wide enough opening for easy cleaning — hard-to-clean carafes sadly get used less often.
