A teapot is the object that turns tea into a ritual — and a ritual into a moment.

Few tableware items have as many civilisations behind them. The teapot was born in China, perfected in Japan, adopted by the English, reinvented by Moroccans, and redesigned by Scandinavians — and in every culture, it has taken on a new shape that reflects its unique approach to time, hospitality and care. Today, the contemporary teapot inherits all these traditions. It can be a handcrafted stoneware piece, a sleek minimalist borosilicate glass design, a Japanese cast-iron tetsubin teapot, an ornate Moroccan metal teapot, or a Scandinavian model with understated geometric lines. Ceramic, glass, cast iron: which teapot material is best?

The material of a teapot influences the quality of tea as much as its look — it is one of those rare pieces where function and beauty are closely intertwined.

The ceramic or stoneware teapot is the most versatile. It retains heat well, does not transfer unwanted flavours to the tea (unlike metal), and is available in a vast range of shapes and colours. A handmade stoneware teapot, with its subtly irregular glaze and rich tones — cobalt blue, forest green, Chinese white — is as beautiful resting on the table as it is practical. It suits all types of tea and is easy to clean. Most of our ceramic designs are dishwasher-safe, though we recommend hand washing for artisan pieces.

The borosilicate glass teapot offers the clarity to watch your tea infuse, which is especially appealing for blooming teas, richly coloured black teas, or vibrant herbal infusions. Glass withstands thermal shock and is easy to wash — it never holds onto flavour. A glass teapot is ideal for those who like to change their tea often without residual aromas affecting the next brew.

The cast-iron teapot — in the Japanese tetsubin style — is the premium choice for serious tea lovers. Cast iron keeps tea hot far longer than any other material; a brew in a cast-iron teapot stays warm long after a ceramic pot has cooled. Enameled interior cast iron suits all teas, while traditional unenameled Japanese models are best for boiling water and highly tannic teas like pu-erh. These teapots are heavy, sturdy, and can become treasured family heirlooms if cared for properly. Never put a cast-iron teapot in the dishwasher or leave it soaking in water.

The fine porcelain teapot is the classic English choice — delicate, light and often adorned with floral or hand-painted patterns. It insulates less than stoneware or cast iron, but its elegance is unmatched for afternoon tea or serving with ceremony. Choosing the right teapot size

Capacity is often overlooked when buying a teapot. A small 400 ml teapot is perfect for one person or for sharing a fine tea between two — premium Japanese green teas or Taiwanese oolongs are enjoyed in small amounts over several infusions. A teapot of 800 ml to 1 litre suits two or three people for daily or afternoon tea. A large teapot of 1.2 to 1.5 litres is designed for gatherings — family breakfast brews or entertaining guests. Also check the filter size or if it includes a removable infuser — a teapot without a filter requires a separate strainer, which many find less convenient.

Teapots and accessories: creating a perfect set

The teapot is never alone on the table. It goes with matching or mismatched teacups, a trivet to protect your table from heat, a tea caddy to keep your leaves fresh, and sometimes a teapot warmer (with candle or gas) to maintain the serving temperature.
