Toilet lighting : faites le bon choix

Well-chosen toilet lighting transforms even the most discreet space in the home into a zone of comfort and safety.

Lighting for toilets is not just a detail: it defines visibility, hygiene and the atmosphere of this often-overlooked room. In the toilet, lighting should be clear yet glare-free, providing even coverage for a typical area of 1.5 to 3 m². Compact formats work best, such as round ceiling lights measuring 20–30 cm across, recessed spotlights of 7–10 cm, or discreet wall lights. A minimum of IP44 protection is recommended to withstand moisture, especially if the toilet adjoins a bathroom. The ideal colour temperature is between 3000 and 4000 Kelvin for a neutral white light—neither too cool nor too yellow—for easy cleaning and detail visibility. A brightness level of 400–800 lumens is enough for the average toilet, to be adjusted depending on wall colour and the presence of a window.

What type of toilet light should you install?

Ceiling lights: A ceiling light remains the most popular solution for toilet lighting, offering even illumination, preventing shadows and fitting easily in the centre of the ceiling. Choose a model measuring 18–25 cm in diameter for a 2 m² space, with an 8–12 W LED output. Frosted glass designs reduce glare and are easy to keep clean—an advantage in a small space.

Recessed spotlights: If your toilet has a suspended ceiling, a recessed spotlight offers a seamless look. One spotlight, 7–9 cm in diameter and aimed at the toilet, is usually sufficient. Pick a model rated IP44 or higher, 6–8 W LED, and a colour temperature of 3500 K for a natural result. Installation should keep at least 60 cm away from any water source.

Wall lights: Wall lights are a useful addition or alternative to a ceiling light, especially for long or narrow toilets. Position at 1.6 m high, on the wall opposite the door or above the mirror if there is one. Compact designs (15–25 cm wide) in metal or glass are easy to clean and create gentle illumination with no bothersome shadows.

What brightness and colour temperature for toilet lighting?

The brightness you need depends on the room size and wall colour. For toilets of 1.5 to 2.5 m², a 6–10 W LED bulb (equivalent to 40–60 W halogen) is plenty. If walls are dark, increase brightness to 700–800 lumens. The ideal colour temperature is between 3000 and 4000 K: 3000 K for a warm ambience, 4000 K for a cleaner, fresher effect. Avoid very cold tints (6000 K), which feel clinical. For toilets with no window, pick a wide-beam fitting with at least a 120° angle to prevent shadows behind the door or cistern.

For toilets next to the bathroom, match the colour temperature with your bathroom lighting for a seamless look. For toilets with a mirror, choose a fitting with a colour rendering index (CRI) of over 80 for true reflections.

Which styles and materials work best for toilet lighting?

Glass ceiling lights: Frosted or opal glass is ideal in toilets as it disperses light evenly without marks and is easy to wipe clean. A 20 cm glass ceiling light, mounted at 2.2 m high, suits an average toilet perfectly.

Metal ceiling lights: For an industrial or modern look, painted or chrome metal is robust and easy to maintain. Matte finishes help avoid fingerprints. A compact, IP44 rated model is safest in damp toilets.

LED ceiling lights: LED ceiling lights are a great choice for toilet lighting thanks to their low energy use, instant light and lifespan of over 20,000 hours. Some options include motion sensors—ideal for guest or children’s toilets.

For a designer look, try geometric shapes or black finishes that match your accessories (toilet brush holder, soap dispenser). In a Scandinavian-inspired toilet, go for natural materials and pale colours to harmonise with a Scandi ceiling light or a minimalist wall light.

Choose the right toilet lighting to guarantee a practical, easy-to-care-for and pleasant space every day.
