Cups and mugs : faites le bon choix

A cup is a tableware item we often choose just for ourselves — and perhaps that's why it says so much about the person who picked it.

There is nothing trivial about the cup you use every morning. It's the first thing you reach for when you wake up, the one you hold in your hands while still half-asleep, the vessel for your coffee, tea or herbal infusion as you begin your day. A beautiful cup doesn't change the taste of your drink — but it does change the experience of enjoying it, and that's no small thing. At Lumeers, our selection includes every style and size: espresso cups, fine porcelain coffee cups, handmade stoneware mugs, teacups with or without a saucer, Japanese handleless cups and cappuccino cups — in materials, colours and finishes to reflect every taste and every morning ritual.

Espresso cup, mug or teacup: which size for your morning routine?

The espresso cup — 60 to 80 ml — is the smallest of the collection. Its compact size is perfect for espresso, meant to be sipped in two or three mouthfuls. Thick-walled designs (the classic 'bar cup' in robust ceramic) keep drinks hot just long enough to savour the flavour, while fine porcelain models favour elegance over heat retention. Our handmade ceramic espresso cups, with their slightly irregular glazes, are the ones you'll want to bring out for guests — they deserve to be admired.

The classic coffee cup — 100 to 150 ml — is for long coffees, noisettes or milky coffees. It's the middle-ground between an espresso and a mug, often linked with a continental breakfast or an elevenses break. With a saucer, it’s more formal; without, it’s perfectly relaxed.

The mug — 250 to 400 ml — is the classic British size that’s become a favourite everywhere. Big enough for long coffees, tea, herbal infusions or hot chocolate — it holds it all with ease. Its capacity and lack of saucer make it the cup you carry from kitchen to sofa to desk without a second thought. Our handmade stoneware mugs, with their matte glazes and unique shapes, are chosen much like a favourite book — for how they look, feel and how they represent you.

The teacup with saucer is wider and lower than a coffee cup — a shape designed to cool tea gently and let you rest your teabag on the saucer. In British and Japanese tradition, choosing a teacup is an art: fine porcelain for delicate blends, thick stoneware for robust teas, or unglazed ceramic interiors (Yixing style) for pu-erh teas.

Porcelain, stoneware, ceramic: materials that make the cup

Fine porcelain is the classic choice for both coffee and teacups. Its translucent quality, delicate weight and fine rim all make for a refined drinking experience. A white porcelain cup with a gold rim or a colourful band remains one of the most classically elegant table pieces. Most contemporary designs are dishwasher safe.

Stoneware makes heavier, thicker, rustic cups and mugs — and ones that feel especially cosy to hold. This warmth is particularly welcome on chilly mornings: a stoneware mug stays hot in your hands in a way fine porcelain never could. Handmade stoneware, with its reactive glazes and unique tones, means every piece has its own character — no two mugs are ever identical.

The Japanese handleless cup — yunomi — is a special style worth mentioning. Tall and cylindrical, it’s meant to be cradled in your palm and lets you feel the heat of your tea through the wall. It’s a different sensory experience than handle cups — more direct and intimate. Our Japanese-style ceramics come in both stoneware and porcelain.

Matching sets or mix-and-match: expressing your style

For years, the classic was a matching set — six identical cups with six saucers. That's no longer the only way. Many fans of beautiful tableware now create deliberately mismatched cup sets — same colour family, same material, but with different shapes and glazes. The result is a more personal, vibrant table that lets every guest choose their own. It’s a new way to host — less formal, but just as thoughtful.

If you prefer mismatched cups, a few simple tips ensure harmony: stick to one colour palette (all neutrals, all warm shades), use the same material (all stoneware or all porcelain), or keep to one size (all mugs or all coffee cups). You only need one unifying thread to tie a beautiful, eclectic collection together.
