Lighting is no minor detail in your home – it’s what brings every space to life.

The right light fitting can turn an ordinary room into a lived-in, inviting space. It shapes volumes, creates cosy zones, highlights textures and colours, and sets an atmosphere that furniture and paint alone cannot provide. Yet lighting is often left until last, treated as a technical problem instead of a powerful design feature. It’s a costly mistake: no matter how beautiful the decor, a poorly lit room never feels truly welcoming. At Lumeers, lighting is at the heart of everything we do. The main types of lighting and their role

A well-lit home never relies on just one source. Combining several lights at different heights and brightness levels creates a rich, adaptable lighting scheme.

Pendant lights and chandeliers are the statement centrepieces, providing visual structure from the ceiling. A pendant above a dining table creates a warm, intimate atmosphere. A chandelier gives your living room a dramatic focal point and a sense of verticality. Even when switched off, these fittings are bold design elements in their own right.

Wall lights bring warmth to the walls, avoiding the flat look of a single ceiling light. In the bedroom, a pair of wall lamps on either side of the bed is a practical and stylish alternative to traditional bedside lamps—freeing up your nightstand and providing targeted reading light. In hallways or staircases, wall lights guide you with a gentle, even glow.

Ceiling lights are among the most versatile options—they illuminate the whole room from above, without taking up floor or surface space. Their subtle presence makes them ideal for children’s rooms, offices, hallways and any space where you want clutter-free, functional general lighting.

Floor lamps bring focused light to specific spots at floor or mid-height. Next to a sofa or reading chair, a floor lamp creates a pool of light that invites you to relax. Indirect uplighter designs gently bathe the room in a warm, soothing glow without glare.

Table lamps and desk lights offer the most personal touch. Placed on a console, sideboard, desk or bedside table, they add eye-level pools of light that soften a space in ways ceiling fittings can’t match. Whether it’s a linen shade, a handcrafted ceramic base, or a brushed brass stand, each lamp is as much a decorative object as it is a practical one.

How to create balanced lighting in every room

The ‘three layers of light’ rule is the foundation of successful home lighting. Ideally, each room should have three types of sources: general lighting (ceiling light, chandelier, pendant), ambient lighting (wall lights, floor lamps, LED strip lights) and task lighting (kitchen spotlights, desk lamps, bedside wall lights). Mixing these allows you to adjust the mood—crisp and bright in the morning, soft and glowing in the evening, or directional light for reading or work.

In the living room, the classic mistake is relying only on a central ceiling light. The result: a flat, harsh light that drains the space. Add an uplighter floor lamp, a couple of small table lamps, and perhaps an LED strip behind the TV stand, and the room feels transformed—without moving any furniture.

In the kitchen, effective task lighting is crucial: use LED spotlights recessed or on tracks above the worktop, or under-cabinet strip lights for direct work surface illumination. But a striking pendant above the island or table turns the kitchen into a space for socialising as well as cooking.

In bedrooms, avoid relying solely on a single ceiling light that forces you into harsh brightness at bedtime. Instead, combine dimmable bedside wall lights, a discreet ceiling light or a statement chandelier, and perhaps a corner floor lamp for reading. A dimmer switch is a must in the bedroom—it lets you switch from bright, practical lighting to a gentle glow for relaxing.

Colour temperature, brightness and LED compatibility: the essentials

The colour temperature of a bulb, measured in Kelvin (K), sets the tone much more than its wattage. Below 3000 K, the light is warm and golden—perfect for living rooms, bedrooms and relaxing spaces. From 3000 to 4000 K, it’s a neutral white—versatile and suited to kitchens and bathrooms. Over 4000 K brings a cooler, bluish light—best restricted to offices and work areas, not living rooms.

LED compatibility is now the standard for all our lighting. LED technology has replaced traditional bulbs in almost all home applications—it’s much more efficient, longer-lasting, and available in every shade and fitting. Most of our fittings take LED bulbs in E27, E14 or GU10 bases. If you want dimmable lights, just check your bulbs really are marked ‘dimmable’—not all LEDs are.

The colour rendering index (CRI) is another crucial but often overlooked detail—especially important in living rooms, dining areas and dressing rooms. A CRI above 90 ensures the true colours of your walls, furniture and clothes show up beautifully under artificial light. Below 80, colours can look dull or distorted—an effect that really alters the feel of a room.
