Paper lampshades : faites le bon choix

A paper lampshade softens and diffuses light, acting like a subtle veil over the raw brightness of a bulb.

The paper lampshade is a decorative yet lightweight and sculptural solution for indoor lighting. Crafted from natural fibres or technical papers, it provides even light diffusion—ideal for a softly lit atmosphere without glare. Available in spherical, cylindrical or pleated shapes with diameters from 20 to 60 cm, paper lampshades suit bedside lamps as well as central pendant lights. Paper weight typically ranges from 80 to 180 g/m², directly affecting translucency and durability. The understated form and warm, filtered glow make paper lampshades a natural fit for modern, Japanese or Scandinavian-inspired interiors.

What types of paper are used for lampshades?

Washi paper: This Japanese paper, made from mulberry fibres, is known for its strength and translucency. A washi paper lampshade creates particularly gentle light with subtle shadows and is suitable for bulbs up to 40 W (LED or low-energy bulbs recommended to avoid overheating). Washi works well in round or pleated designs, from 30 to 50 cm diameter, for pendants or ceiling lights.

Kraft paper: This thicker paper (120 to 180 g/m²) brings a raw, natural look to lampshades. It's perfect for rustic or minimalist interiors and works with LED bulbs from 5 to 15 W. Kraft is often found in cylindrical or conic lampshades, from 20 to 40 cm high.

Fire-retardant paper: For added safety, some lampshades are treated to meet M1 fire standards—essential in children’s bedrooms or public spaces. The paper remains thin (80 to 100 g/m²) to preserve light diffusion, but with reinforced heat resistance.

If you’re interested in a natural alternative, rattan offers a more textured look while maintaining a soft diffusion of light.

What size and brightness for each room?

Lampshade size depends on the room and its function. For a bedside lamp, choose 20–30 cm diameter with a 400–600 lumen bulb (4–7 W LED) for comfortable ambient light that isn’t harsh. For living or dining rooms, a paper lampshade of 40–60 cm, hung 80–100 cm above the table, will light 8–15 m² with a 1000–1500 lumen bulb (10–15 W LED). In a child’s bedroom, opt for a lightweight model, 25–35 cm, with a maximum 5–8 W LED bulb, and always use fire-retardant paper.

Avoid classic paper lampshades in humid rooms like bathrooms; instead choose shades with a suitable protection rating, or consider paper ceiling lights designed for these spaces.

Centrally hung pendants are best installed 180–210 cm above the floor to avoid direct glare and ensure even diffusion. XXL shades (up to 80 cm diameter) suit large rooms or high ceilings but need a powerful bulb (up to 2000 lumens) to avoid shadow effects.

Care tips and styling ideas

Paper lampshades need delicate care: dust regularly with an anti-static feather duster or dry cloth, never damp. For marks, use a soft white eraser and avoid liquids which can deform or stain. If the shade is deformed, it may be gently reshaped by hand, but avoid excessive handling.

For a graphic effect, group several paper shades at varied heights and sizes—ideal in stairwells or above long tables. Pleated or origami styles bring a modern touch, while round lampshades feel classic or zen.

For a cohesive look, match your paper lampshade with other natural materials and neutral colours in the room. Paper pendant lights create an airy feel throughout, and a paper floor lamp is ideal for reading corners or a relaxed lounge space.

For a harmonious effect, combine your paper shade with pale wood, natural textiles or bedside lamp shades in matching tones.
