Available in spherical, cylindrical or pleated shapes with diameters from 20 to 60 cm, paper lampshades suit bedside lamps as well as central pendant lights. Paper weight typically ranges from 80 to 180 g/m², directly affecting translucency and durability. The understated form and warm, filtered glow make paper lampshades a natural fit for modern, Japanese or Scandinavian-inspired interiors.

What types of paper are used for lampshades?

Washi paper: This Japanese paper, made from mulberry fibres, is known for its strength and translucency. A washi paper lampshade creates particularly gentle light with subtle shadows and is suitable for bulbs up to 40 W (LED or low-energy bulbs recommended to avoid overheating). Washi works well in round or pleated designs, from 30 to 50 cm diameter, for pendants or ceiling lights.

Kraft paper: This thicker paper (120 to 180 g/m²) brings a raw, natural look to lampshades. It's perfect for rustic or minimalist interiors and works with LED bulbs from 5 to 15 W. Kraft is often found in cylindrical or conic lampshades, from 20 to 40 cm high.

Fire-retardant paper: For added safety, some lampshades are treated to meet M1 fire standards—essential in children’s bedrooms or public spaces. The paper remains thin (80 to 100 g/m²) to preserve light diffusion, but with reinforced heat resistance.
