Indoors, every light source shapes the atmosphere — and every room deserves its own.

This is at the heart of contemporary interior design: gone are the days of a single central indoor light to illuminate everything. Today, you layer, combine and multiply lighting sources at different heights and intensities to create spaces that shift with the time of day, how you use the room and your mood. A pendant over the table, a wall light in the hallway, an indirect floor lamp in the living room or a desk lamp for your workspace — it’s this considered mix of indoor lighting, well coordinated, that turns a house from simply functional into truly liveable. Indoor lighting for each room: what changes from space to space

The way you light your home should change radically from one room to another — not only in terms of brightness, but the style, direction and overall mood.

In the living room, the main indoor light — whether that’s a chandelier or pendant — creates structure and sets the tone. But it’s the balance with secondary sources — floor lamps, table lamps, accent spotlights — that gives your living room its unique character. Relying on a single light always leaves the room visually flat, no matter how good that fitting might be.

In the kitchen, function is king. Recessed spotlights or track lights provide general lighting; LED strip lights under cupboards brighten up worktops directly. A designer pendant over the island or table adds the decorative touch that transforms an everyday kitchen into a truly welcoming space.

In the bedroom, indoor lighting should always be dimmable for comfort before sleep. Bedside reading lamps can be placed on a table or fixed to the wall either side of the bed. A discreet ceiling light or a bold chandelier completes the picture, depending on the room’s size and style. Aim for a warm colour temperature between 2700 K and 3000 K — perfect for creating a relaxing retreat.

In the bathroom, the right protection rating is non-negotiable. Zones around basins and showers are classified, so always check the IP rating before installation. An illuminated mirror or wall lights either side of the mirror create the best possible lighting for applying makeup or shaving — frontal lighting avoids the harsh shadows you get from ceiling lights alone.

In a home office, natural daylight should be your first resource — position your desk to have a window to the side, not behind or directly in front of you. Add a dimmable desk lamp with adjustable colour temperature for the most productive work environment — 3000 K for calm, 4000 K for intense focus.

Choosing indoor lighting to suit your style

Indoor lighting isn’t only about functionality — it’s a key part of your room’s style. Here are a few pairing ideas that work beautifully.

In a modern, minimalist space, look for lighting with clean lines, understated high-quality materials — brushed steel, opal glass, concrete — and no unnecessary decoration. The beauty is in the detailing and the shapes themselves. A Scandinavian-inspired room calls for natural wood, soft fabrics and organic forms: an ash-wood ceiling light, a cotton pendant, a table lamp with an oak base and linen shade. These bring the warmth and intimacy that define Nordic style.

For a bohemian or natural look, try rattan, bamboo, raffia or seagrass lamps for a warm, organic feel. The filtered light through the natural weave makes for a beautifully gentle, calming ambience — especially in bedrooms and living rooms. If your home is more industrial or loft style, opt for black metal, wrought iron, bare bulb pendants or exposed cages. These bold lights suit spaces with height and room to breathe, echoing the raw, functional vibe of true industrial design.

IP rating, LED compatibility and dimmers: the top three technical checks

Before you buy any indoor lighting, ask these three technical questions. First, the IP rating: in dry rooms (living rooms, bedrooms, studies), standard lights are fine. In bathrooms, you’ll need at least IP44 near water and IP65 for fittings directly exposed to splashes. Second, LED compatibility: check the fitting type (E27, E14, GU10), the maximum wattage and which lamps are recommended. Third, dimmer compatibility: if you want to control brightness — which we strongly recommend for living rooms and bedrooms — make sure both your light and your LED bulbs can be dimmed. A quick check for these details saves trouble at installation.
