Baby room lighting : faites le bon choix

Baby room lighting brightens little one's first dreams and creates a soothing atmosphere from the very first days at home.

Choosing nursery lighting is about more than looks: it's an essential element for safety, comfortable lighting and the child’s sensory development. Nursery lights come in ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall lights and night lights, each designed for specific needs. Fabric models offer a soft glow — perfect for nap times — while wooden or certified plastic options provide durability and easy cleaning. Sizes vary: a baby ceiling light is usually 25–40 cm in diameter, ideal for rooms of 8–12 m². Adjustable pendant lights suit changing room layouts and growing children. The recommended colour temperature for nursery lighting is 2700–3000 Kelvin for a warm, calming ambience. Choose LED bulbs between 5 and 12 watts (400 to 900 lumens) to provide enough light without being harsh on delicate eyes.

Which nursery lights to choose based on age and use?

Baby ceiling lights offer gentle, even light for general illumination. Fitted centrally at 2.2–2.5 m high, they are safely out of reach. Fabric or frosted plastic designs prevent glare. For a 10 m² nursery, a 30 cm diameter ceiling light with 800 lumens gives ideal coverage. Playful motifs (clouds, stars, animals) spark imagination without overwhelming the décor. For more child-friendly lighting designs, the children’s

Baby pendant lights are best for rooms with ceilings higher than 2.5 m. Adjustable, they can hang from 30 to 80 cm to suit the child’s age: higher for babies, lower as they become more independent. Fabric and natural wood pendants give a soft, restful light perfect for bedtime. For a 12 m² room, a 35 cm pendant with 600–900 lumens is ideal. Gentle shapes and pastel shades blend easily with evolving décor. Find more inspiration with the children’s pendant lights collection, full of age-appropriate designs.

Nursery wall lights are ideal for creating soft background lighting, especially above the changing area or next to the cot. Positioned 120–140 cm from the floor, they offer gentle, indirect light with minimal shadows. Wooden or fabric wall lights with 3–6 watt LED bulbs (250 to 500 lumens) help create a gentle bedtime routine. Built-in switches make it easy to switch the light on or off without waking baby. For extra style and practicality, the children’s wall lights collection provides plenty of options to personalise the space.

What brightness and colour temperature for nursery lighting?

The output of nursery lighting should suit the size and layout of the room. For general lighting, aim for around 70–100 lumens per m² — so a 10 m² bedroom needs 700–1000 lumens, split between ceiling lights and accent lights. Choose LED bulbs for low heat and long life (up to 25,000 hours). The ideal colour temperature is 2700 to 3000 K, giving a cosy, soothing light to encourage sleep. Avoid bulbs above 3500 K, which are too white or blue and can disturb a baby's natural sleep cycle. For night lights and bedside lamps, 50–150 lumens and a soft amber or pastel glow are enough. Dimmable lights are ideal so you can adjust brightness for play, bedtime or nighttime checks.

How to match nursery lighting with décor and ensure safety?

Pick lighting that coordinates with the room’s materials, colours and patterns. Lights in natural wood match Scandi or simple interiors, while fabric shades add softness and charm. For white or pastel nurseries, opt for neutral or lightly coloured finishes to keep the space calm. Cloud, star and animal prints are timeless and grow with your child. Complete the look with matching textiles such as bedding or a cosy rug.

For safety, make sure nursery lights meet CE standards and have an IP20 rating or higher. Keep cords out of reach, use diffusers to cover bulbs, and opt for materials that are certified free from harmful substances (EN71 or equivalent). For shared or adaptable spaces, consider adding a children’s bedside lamp on a shelf or dresser, perfect for bedtime stories or to comfort toddlers at night.

Care depends on material: fabric shades can be dusted with a handheld vacuum or soft brush, while wooden and plastic lights wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and use low voltage LED bulbs to prevent overheating. With the right choice, nursery lighting will create a safe, stylish space for your child from newborn days through their early years.
