Paper pendant lights : faites le bon choix

Paper pendant lights bring a sense of effortless lightness to your space, structuring a room without ever weighing it down.

These pendants are a refined choice if you're after a soft, diffused and enveloping light, as well as pure lines and delicate materials. Available in a variety of shapes, from classic globes (40 to 60 cm in diameter) through to striking XXL models over 80 cm—ideal for high ceilings and open-plan living. Their main role is to provide an even, general light without glare, making them perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, or relaxing spaces. The shades—often made from Japanese washi or rice paper—gently filter the light to create a calm, soothing atmosphere with a contemporary, graphic touch.

Which paper pendant style to choose?

Classic globe: Inspired by Asian lanterns, the timeless globe remains a favourite. A 40 cm diameter suits a room of 10 to 15 m², while a 60 cm globe is perfect for a 20 m² lounge. The thickness of the paper (usually 30 to 60 g/m²) affects how much light is diffused: finer paper gives a softer glow.

Pleated paper pendant: Pleated or origami styles offer a sculptural effect, playing with shadows and geometry—ideal for a reading nook or modern dining area. For a 120 cm wide table, choose a pendant around 50 cm in diameter.

Cloud-style pendant: Organic, cloud-inspired shapes add a poetic and airy touch. They work beautifully in a child’s bedroom or creative space. For a 12 m² room, a cloud pendant between 45 and 55 cm long is recommended.

If you want to explore other natural materials, a natural fibre pendant offers alternatives in plant fibres while keeping that light, airy feel.

How high should you hang a paper pendant?

The ideal height depends on the room and its use. Above a table, allow 70–90 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the pendant to avoid glare and keep sightlines clear. In a living space, a height of 210–230 cm from floor to base is perfect for general lighting. In a bedroom, lower the pendant slightly (190–200 cm from the floor) to create a cosier atmosphere.

For bulbs, go for an LED between 8 and 12 W (equivalent to 60–100 W incandescent), offering 800–1200 lumens for a space of 12–20 m². For a warm, relaxing light, choose a colour temperature between 2700 and 3000 K. Note the protection rating: paper pendant lights aren’t suitable for damp areas (not IP44 rated)—use them in dry spaces only.

To create a balanced look in the bedroom, pair your paper pendant with a matching paper ceiling light for layered lighting without sacrificing style.

How to care for and style a paper pendant light?

Paper pendants need gentle care—dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or antistatic duster. Avoid water and household cleaners, as paper is sensitive to moisture and stains. To prolong its life, install it away from busy walkways and direct heat sources.

Paper pendant lights suit minimalist, Scandinavian, or Japanese-inspired interiors, pairing beautifully with Scandi style pendants, pale woods, and natural textiles.

For gentle, layered lighting, combine your paper pendant with a matching paper lamp for the wall or table, multiplying light sources without overcrowding the space.

In a child’s bedroom or creative area, team your paper pendant with a children’s pendant light for a playful and personalised touch, while still ensuring safe, glare-free lighting.
