Paper pendant lights : faites le bon choix

A paper pendant light turns light into a delicate material, combining lightness and precision.

Paper pendant lights offer a decorative solution that is both graphic and airy—perfect for anyone seeking gentle, diffused illumination without glare. Crafted from Japanese washi paper, natural fibres or technical fire-retardant papers, they come in spherical, pleated, origami or cloud-like shapes, from 30 cm in diameter for bedrooms to 80 cm for spacious living rooms. Grammage typically ranges from 60 to 120 g/m², ensuring a soft, even diffusion of light while retaining a sturdy structure. These pendants complement every style—from Scandinavian minimalism to Japanese-inspired interiors or bohemian and contemporary rooms. Hang a paper pendant centrally or cluster several together, adjusting the height to suit your space and the effect you want to achieve.

Which paper types are best for paper pendant lights?

Washi paper: This Japanese paper, made from mulberry fibres, offers exceptional translucency and superior moisture resistance. Ideal for large pendant lights (up to 100 cm diameter), it won't sag under weight. Washi allows for delicate patterns, detailed cut-outs and very soft light diffusion, creating a soothing atmosphere.

Fire-retardant paper: For public spaces or children's bedrooms, choose a paper pendant made from fire-resistant paper (M1 rating). This paper, often white or ivory, ensures safety without sacrificing style. Suitable for LED bulbs up to 15 W (1200 lumens equivalent) with no risk of yellowing or warping.

Recycled paper: Designs in recycled paper stand out for their textured, slightly grainy feel and eco-friendly appeal. These suit living spaces, but require a low-heat LED bulb (max 8 W) to protect the material.

For a similarly light but more sophisticated option, explore the fabric pendant light collection for airy suspensions in other natural materials.

What size and brightness for paper pendants by room?

The right diameter and brightness for a paper pendant depends on the size of your space and ceiling height.

Bedroom: A 30 to 40 cm paper pendant is perfect for a 10 to 15 m² bedroom. Hang at 210 cm from the floor to avoid direct contact. Use an 8–10 W LED bulb (800–1000 lumens), with a colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K for a warm glow.

Living room: For a 20 to 30 m² lounge, choose a 60 to 80 cm diameter pendant, hung at 220–240 cm above the floor. Recommended power is 15–20 W LED (1500–2000 lumens), in warm or neutral white as you prefer. An XXL pendant is eye-catching and shapes the space without making it feel heavy.

Dining area: Above the table, a 40 to 60 cm pendant suspended 75–90 cm from the tabletop creates a soft, shadow-free halo. Opt for a dimmable LED bulb to adjust the mood as needed.

If you love organic shapes and natural fibres, the paper pendant collection features single or triple-light options, perfect for dining areas or hallways.

Care tips and styling ideas

Paper pendant lights need gentle care: dust regularly with an anti-static duster or use a hairdryer on a cool setting. Avoid water and cleaning products. For stains, gently dab with a white eraser or dry cloth. To prolong the life of your paper pendant, keep it away from draughts and humidity (do not use in bathrooms unless rated IP44).

Pair paper pendants with pale wood accents, natural textiles or round mirrors to enhance their softness. Combine with matching lights, such as a paper wall lamp, for a cohesive lighting scheme.

For a Japanese or minimalist atmosphere, team your paper pendant with paper ceiling lights in secondary spaces to unify the lighting and play with different volumes.
