Mushroom floor lamps : faites le bon choix

A mushroom floor lamp is a striking silhouette that instantly draws the eye and brings structure to a room.

The mushroom floor lamp makes a statement as a centrepiece in modern lighting. Its iconic shape, inspired by Italian designs from the 1970s, pairs a slender base with a wide, hemispherical shade, usually crafted from metal or opal glass. This blend of vintage and contemporary style offers a soft, enveloping glow—ideal for creating a warm atmosphere in living rooms, bedrooms or home offices. Most models stand between 120 and 170 cm tall, with a shade diameter of 30 to 50 cm, fitting neatly into reading corners or open-plan spaces. For brightness, opt for an LED bulb of 8 to 15 W (equivalent to 60 to 120 W halogen) for around 800 to 1500 lumens, which is perfect for ambient lighting without dazzling.

Which materials for mushroom floor lamps?

Lacquered metal: Mushroom

Opal glass: Models with opal glass are prized for their ability to soften and diffuse light. The 3 to 5 mm thick shade delivers even illumination with no harsh shadows. These mushroom floor lamps are ideal in bedrooms or reading corners, where gentle light is key. As glass is fragile, choose a weighted base to avoid tipping.

ABS plastic: Some mushroom floor lamps use ABS plastic for its lightness and impact resistance. Easy to care for—a quick wipe with a damp cloth is enough to remove dust. Plastic also allows for brighter colours, making it great for energising creative or youthful spaces.

If you’re seeking a warmer look, a wooden floor lamp offers a natural alternative, with oak or walnut bases and shades in fabric or glass.

What size and brightness for each room?

The right mushroom floor lamp depends on your space and intended use. For a living room of 20 to 30 sqm, choose a lamp 150 to 170 cm tall with a 12 to 15 W LED bulb (1000 to 1500 lumens). Place it 60 cm from a sofa or armchair for effective accent lighting that doesn’t get in the way. In the bedroom, a mushroom floor lamp 120 to 140 cm tall with an 8 to 10 W bulb (800 to 1000 lumens) will give a soft light by the bed or in a reading nook.

For work spaces, look for a mushroom floor lamp with a dimmer, so you can adjust the brightness to your needs. Choose a colour temperature between 2700 and 3000 K for a cosy feel, or up to 4000 K for a more neutral light that helps concentration.

For interiors with bold style, a designer mushroom lamp with chromed or coloured finishes makes a dramatic choice to zone a space or highlight a particular area.

How to style a mushroom floor lamp?

The mushroom floor lamp works with a range of looks, from vintage to contemporary. In a Scandinavian lounge, choose pale colours and natural materials. For an industrial vibe, go for a black or chrome metal model next to steel or raw wood furniture. Coloured versions, meanwhile, inject vibrancy into minimalist spaces or children’s rooms.

To coordinate your look, team the mushroom floor lamp with table lamps from the same range, or with pendant lights in rounded designs. Match the height to your ceiling: in a room with 250 cm ceilings, a 150 cm floor lamp leaves enough visual space without crowding.

Caring for your mushroom lamp depends on the material. Lacquered metal just needs a light wipe with a microfibre cloth. Clean opal glass with a specialist product to avoid marks. For plastic, skip abrasive cleaners that might dull the finish.

In a bright room, a white mushroom floor lamp enhances daylight and visually disappears, while a black or coloured model stands out as a focal point.

For a soft, indirect effect, choose a model with an internal diffuser or dimmer to tailor the light to the moment. Thanks to its versatility and style, the mushroom floor lamp remains a reliable choice to elevate any living space.
