Lampshades : faites le bon choix

The lampshade is the part of a light fitting that the light passes through – and that’s exactly why it transforms everything.

You buy a lamp base, you buy a pendant, you install a floor lamp – and then you realise it’s the lampshade that truly sets the mood. The same 2700 K bulb gives a cold, harsh light in a fine white shade, a soft and warm glow in a thick linen lampshade, and a gently diffused, golden ambience in an amber parchment shade. None of this is accidental: the lampshade is the filter between your bulb and the room, and every material, colour and shape changes that light in a unique way. Choosing the right lampshade is about selecting the quality of light that fills your space – not just the look of the fitting. At Lumeers, our collection of lampshades covers every format, material and style: fabric shades (linen, cotton, velvet, silk), Japanese paper, perforated metal, rattan, parchment, as well as drum, empire, conical and cylindrical shapes – there’s something for every lamp base, pendant and atmosphere.

Lampshade materials: how each fabric shapes the light

This is the first – and most important – decision. The lampshade material directly affects the quality and colour of the light it creates.

Linen lampshades produce the warmest, softest glow. Their slightly irregular natural fibres diffuse the light unevenly, creating a gentle play of light and shade on your walls and ceiling. Thick linen gives an intimate, mellow effect; finer linen produces a lighter, more open glow. The natural tones of linen – beige, ecru, soft gold – gently warm the light, making them perfect for cosy, inviting rooms. These shades fit effortlessly with any style – from Scandinavian and natural to boho and contemporary.

Cotton lampshades are smoother than linen, providing a more even diffusion. Their white or cream finish gives a clear, gentle light, more neutral than linen’s subtle warmth. Ideal for contemporary or minimalist interiors, thick or double-layer cotton also hides the bulb more effectively, eliminating the visible bulb effect that can spoil some designs.

Velvet lampshades are the most opulent option. Dense fibres block most of the side light, focusing it downwards in a concentrated beam – perfect for reading or accent lighting. The exterior appears almost black when unlit, creating a dramatic contrast with the luminous interior. In burgundy, bottle green, midnight blue or gold, velvet lampshades become statement decorative pieces.

Japanese paper lampshades (washi) cast an impressively soft, diffused glow – almost like a lantern. Their semi-transparent structure lets the light spill in all directions, wrapping a space in smooth, shadowless illumination. Their visual lightness is unparalleled, popular in Japanese or Scandinavian-inspired interiors where you want the fitting to have a minimal presence.

Rattan or woven bamboo lampshades create dramatic patterned shadows – the interlaced fibres cast playful geometric or organic shapes on walls and ceilings when the lamp is on. This is mood lighting and statement lighting in one, ideal for boho, tropical or natural settings. Rather than softening the light, these shades break it up, shaping dramatic scenes.

Perforated metal lampshades produce a similar effect to rattan but with sharper, more geometric patterns. The cut-outs send constellations of light points across the surrounding walls – a stunning effect in bedrooms or hallways. In gold, silver or black finishes, they add a bold contemporary or industrial twist.

Lampshade shapes: cylinder, conical, drum, empire – which outline is right?

Lampshade shape affects both the direction of light and the visual statement the lamp makes. Each silhouette has its own strengths.

Cylindrical lampshades (equal diameter top and bottom) are the most neutral and versatile. They distribute light evenly downwards and to the sides, blending in seamlessly with any modern style. This is the go-to for bedside lamps and contemporary table lamps.

Conical lampshades (narrower at the top) focus light more downwards. Their wider base offers a broad spread – great for reading light or task areas. Think of classic desk lamps or vintage styles – this shape has real character.

Drum lampshades are wide, shallow cylinders – more disc than tube. Often used on pendants and ceiling lights, they create a striking, low profile and direct most light downwards, with an attractive halo effect – especially above dining tables.

Empire lampshades – flared towards the bottom with a gently curved profile – are the most traditional shape. Inspired by library lamps and vintage desks, they bring a sense of heritage and warmth; in cream parchment or printed fabric, they suit classic, Art Deco or bold eclectic interiors.

How do you choose the right lampshade size?

The balance between lampshade and base is crucial. A shade that’s too small looks perched and awkward; too wide and it overwhelms the lamp. Here are a few simple rules to help you find the right fit.

For a table lamp or bedside lamp, the width of the shade at its base should be close to the full height of the lamp base. If your base is 40 cm high, a shade of 35 to 45 cm diameter works well. The shade’s height should be about two thirds of the base’s height.

For a desk or reading lamp, go for a smaller, more focused shade – a conical or narrow cylinder – to concentrate light on your work area. Desk lamps with directional shades allow you to adjust the angle whenever needed.

For a pendant, the size and shape of the shade should relate to ceiling height and the area you want to illuminate. Over dining tables, a wide, low fabric lampshade creates the perfect focused glow. The larger the shade, the broader the spread of light; narrower shades give a more concentrated effect.

Finally, always check your shade’s fitting is compatible with your lamp holder before buying. Lampshades are fixed using different systems – ring, spider, clip – and they’re not always interchangeable. Replacement shades must be fixed the same way as your original, or adapted with the right accessory.
