Vintage lampshades : faites le bon choix

A vintage lampshade brings timeless character to interiors, creating lighting that never goes out of style.

Vintage lampshades are a confident choice for those seeking to combine authenticity and refinement in home décor. Their charm lies in evocative shapes—cone, dome, tulip or bell—and refined materials such as opal glass, aged brass, pleated or embroidered fabric, and glazed porcelain. Options range from 15 to 40 cm in diameter for bedside lamps, and up to 60 cm for pendants or ceiling lights, making it easy to find the right size for every need, from a reading corner to the centrepiece of your living room. More than just decoration, a vintage lampshade softens glare from LED or filament bulbs, diffuses ambient light, and enhances mouldings, woodwork, or vintage furniture.

Which materials are best for a vintage lampshade?

Opal glass: Sought after for its gentle, even diffusion, white or bluish opal glass features in many vintage lampshades. A 25 cm size provides ideal lighting (600–900 lumens) for a bedside table or desk. Frosted or etched glass, often seen on antique ceiling lights, gives an understated elegance and is easily wiped clean with warm water.

Pleated or embroidered fabric: A vintage fabric lampshade, hand-pleated or trimmed, offers a warm glow (ideal temperature: 2700–3000 K). Choose 30–40 cm for floor lamps or tall table lamps. Cotton or linen fabric with an anti-dust treatment can be dusted with a soft brush. Silk or velvet models are best for low-humidity areas.

Brass, bronze, porcelain: Vintage lampshades in patinated brass or chiselled bronze suit classic or art deco atmospheres. Glazed porcelain shades of 20–30 cm are ideal for kitchens or hallways, especially on antique wall lights. These materials withstand heat and can be cleaned with a slightly damp microfibre cloth.

How to choose the size and brightness of a vintage lampshade for each room?

For living rooms, select a vintage lampshade of 40–60 cm in diameter with a 10–15 W LED bulb (equivalent to 75–100 W incandescent), providing 1000–1500 lumens to light a 15–25 m² area. For bedrooms, a 25–35 cm lampshade and a 5–8 W LED bulb (400–700 lumens) creates softer ambient light. In hallways or entrances, a compact vintage lampshade (15–25 cm) on a wall or ceiling light delivers targeted illumination without glare.

Height is important: for pendant lights, hang the vintage lampshade 180–200 cm from floor to bottom edge in living rooms, or 120–140 cm above a dining table. On a floor lamp, it should sit at seated eye level (about 120 cm from the floor). For bedside lamps, position the bottom of the shade 40–50 cm above the mattress for comfortable reading.

Check the protection rating (IP20 for dry rooms, IP44 or higher in bathrooms). Some vintage glass or metal lampshades fit perfectly on vintage floor lamps or retro-style fittings.

Which styles and pairings suit a vintage lampshade?

Art deco style: Vintage lampshades with geometric patterns, frosted glass, or gold brass pair well with antique chandeliers or dark wood furniture. Use filament bulbs to enhance the vintage look.

Country house atmosphere: A floral or natural linen vintage lampshade blends beautifully in rustic décor, on a table or floor lamp with turned wood. Match with heavy curtains and woven rugs for cosiness.

Contemporary mix and match: Contrast a classic white porcelain vintage lampshade with modern elements such as a metal table or designer mirror to highlight its unique charm.

For care, dust regularly with a soft brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on glass or metal. A well-maintained vintage lampshade retains its shine and decorative value for decades. For more choices, browse the vintage lampshade collection inspired by the 1950s to 1980s—perfect for completing a retro or industrial look.
