Cone lampshades : faites le bon choix

A cone lampshade offers precise, focused lighting and defines any space with its signature directional design.

The cone lampshade is a stylish and practical choice to structure your room’s lighting. Its tapered silhouette, typically between 20 and 50 cm wide at the base, channels light directly downwards, ideal for highlighting a dining table, desk or reading corner. Popular on table lamps, floor lamps and pendant lights, it delivers targeted illumination, reduces side glare and showcases the surface below. Cone lampshades are available in a range of materials and finishes—from thick cotton and lacquered metal to linen and paper—so there’s an option to suit every interior style, from classic to contemporary.

Which materials are best for a cone lampshade?

Fabric lampshade: Cotton, linen or synthetic fabrics are the most popular for cone lampshades. They diffuse soft, even light—perfect for cosy settings. Cotton (200 g/m²) offers great shape and balanced diffusion, while textured linen brings a stylish, natural touch. For bedrooms or living rooms, choose light-coloured fabrics to maximise illumination.

Metal lampshade: Metal, often chosen for industrial or contemporary style, allows for a crisp, controlled beam of light. A 30 cm lacquered aluminium cone, for example, channels up to 1200 lumens from a 12W LED bulb onto a concentrated area—ideal above worktops or dining tables. White or gold inner finishes enhance the reflection and warmth of the light.

Papier lampshade: Lightweight and budget-friendly, paper suits smaller cones (15–25 cm diameter). It provides softly diffused light, ideal for bedside lamps or extra pendants. Check the IP rating: for humid rooms, choose models rated IP44 or above.

What size and bulb output for a cone lampshade?

Pick the cone lampshade’s diameter and height based on the room and function. For bedside lamps, a cone of 18–25 cm paired with a 5–7W LED bulb (400–600 lumens, 2700K for warm light) is plenty. On a floor lamp, opt for a 35–45 cm cone to balance proportions and provide ample light (10–15W bulb, 800–1500 lumens).

For pendant lighting above tables, as a rule, the cone should be around half the width of the table—a 50–60 cm shade for a 120 cm table. Hang it 70–80 cm above the tabletop to avoid glare and deliver focused, effective light. For low ceilings, choose a compact cone (20–30 cm tall) to keep the space open and light.

Design lovers will find clean-lined, premium finishes among the designer lampshade collection.

How to incorporate a cone lampshade into any room?

In the living room, cone lampshades work well on floor lamps or as central pendants. For a welcoming glow, pair with a 2700K LED filament bulb. In the bedroom, small versions on bedside lamps provide soft, relaxing lighting. In a home office, metal cones are ideal for focusing light on your workspace; opt for a 4000K bulb for clear, neutral illumination that promotes concentration.

For wooden interiors, the wooden lampshade collection features cones in veneer or laminated finishes—perfect for adding a natural or Scandinavian touch.

As pendant lights, cone lampshades suit kitchens and dining rooms alike. For a 10 m² kitchen, a 30 cm cone with a 10W LED (1000 lumens) gives you practical, bright light. In dining rooms, use several cones in a row for a striking graphic effect and even light distribution.

If you prefer a more graphical approach, the conical lampshade collection offers variants with different flares and geometric shapes for a unique look.

For maintenance, dust your cone lampshade regularly with a soft cloth or textile brush. Metal versions can be wiped with a damp cloth, while fabric or paper styles should be cleaned dry to protect the material.
