Pleated lamp shades : faites le bon choix

A pleated lamp shade is all about precise folds that serve both function and design, giving your lighting a refined touch.

The pleated shade is the choice for those seeking both visual elegance and a soft diffusion of light. Its regular pleats, expertly crafted from fabric or paper, shape the illumination and create subtle shadow play. Most often found in a conical shape (20-40 cm diameter for bedside lamps, up to 60 cm for floor lamps or pendant lights), it’s also available in cylindrical or rectangular forms, suitable for table lamps, pendant lights or floor lamps. A pleated lamp shade is more than a decorative accessory: it directly impacts the lighting quality, filtering glare and directing the light flow according to the density and depth of each pleat.

Which materials are best for a pleated lamp shade?

Cotton: Pleated cotton offers a natural matte texture, perfect for soft, ambient lighting. Recommended weight: 120 to 180 gsm for crisp pleats. Clean it with a dry cloth or gentle brush. White or ecru is timeless, while pastel tones suit Scandinavian and romantic interiors.

Silk: Pleated silk brings a subtle sheen and very even light diffusion. It’s ideal for sophisticated spaces but needs delicate care (regular dusting, avoid moisture). Fine pleats (2-3 mm spacing) highlight the elegance of the material.

Papier: Pleated paper shades (usually washi or textured paper) delight with their lightness and graphic look. Recommended thickness: 80 to 120 gsm to prevent distortion. Perfect for Japanese or minimalist atmospheres. Check the IP rating—choose at least IP44 for bathroom use.

Synthetic fabric: Polyester or polycotton fibres create crisp, durable pleats with easy care (hand washing possible), making them a smart choice for heavy use or children’s rooms.

For perfect balance with a floor lamp, a pleated shade of 40-50 cm diameter and 25-35 cm height will offer even light without hiding the bulb.

How to choose the right size and wattage for your pleated shade?

Choose the diameter based on your lamp and room. For a bedside lamp, a 20-30 cm pleated shade is enough for soft lighting (E14 socket, 5-7 W LED, 400-600 lumens, colour temperature 2700–3000 K). For a central pendant, opt for 40–60 cm diameter and 25–35 cm height with an E27 LED bulb (10–15 W, 800–1200 lumens) for rooms of 12–20 sqm.

Installation height matters: for a pendant above a table, hang the pleated shade 70–80 cm from the tabletop. On a floor lamp, the base of the shade should be 160–170 cm from the floor for the best ambient effect. In a bedroom, a 25–35 cm high shade on a bedside table prevents direct glare.

For a beautiful mix of textures, pair a pleated shade with a touch bedside lamp—the adjustable light lets you take full advantage of the pleats’ diffused glow for reading or relaxing.

What styles and combinations work with pleated lamp shades?

Pleated shades fit a variety of interiors. In white or ecru, they bring classic elegance or a country house look. Coloured or geometric designs suit modern or Scandinavian décors. For a vintage touch, choose wide pleats (5–10 mm) and scalloped edges.

In the living room, a 40 cm pleated shade on a table lamp creates a striking focal point; grouped on a triple pendant, they add rhythm to a dining space. For children, go for synthetic fabrics with tight pleats to help keep dust away and make cleaning easier.

A tip: on a bedroom lamp, pleats help soften the blue light from LED bulbs, making for a more relaxing setting.

To add character, combine a pleated shade with a base in natural wood or lacquered metal. Mixing materials lets the pleats shine. In the hallway, a small pleated shade (15–20 cm) on a wall light creates a welcoming ambience without glare.

For easy upkeep, dust pleated shades weekly with a soft brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid water on paper or silk, and use professional dry cleaning once a year for delicate fabrics.

To discover more refined forms, explore the conical shade collection, offering the same timeless look and versatile design as pleated shades.
