Rectangular lampshades : faites le bon choix

Light stretches in crisp lines, sculpting the space with precision.

The rectangular lampshade stands out as a striking and functional lighting solution, perfect for shaping light in both contemporary and classic interiors. Its elongated form, typically 30 to 80 cm long and 15 to 30 cm high, provides an even, glare-free glow that enhances the room’s geometry. This versatile design suits table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling pendants alike, offering a sleek alternative to traditional round shades. Rectangular lampshades work beautifully on a console, bedside table or as a ceiling light, complementing your furniture lines and ensuring an optimal distribution of light.

Which materials for a rectangular lampshade?

Cotton fabric: Cotton (200 to 300 g/m²) softly diffuses light for a cosy, natural feel. It’s ideal for intimate settings like bedrooms or lounges. Thicker cotton shades prevent unwanted shadows and limit transparency.

Linen: Linen’s textured finish brings an organic, slightly rustic touch, recommended for Scandinavian or nature-inspired homes. A 250 g/m² linen rectangular lampshade lets warm light pass through—perfect for relaxing spaces.

Polyester: Durable and easy to care for, polyester allows for taut finishes and a wide range of colours. It’s perfect for busy areas like offices or hallways that see frequent use.

Paper lampshade: Although more delicate, paper is very lightweight and diffuses a gentle, mellow light—great for tranquil rooms. Be mindful of protection rating: in a bathroom, choose at least an IP44-rated model.

For a perfect match with a floor lamp, select a rectangular lampshade no wider than the lamp base to maintain visual balance.

What size and wattage for each room?

The right size of rectangular lampshade depends on the area to illuminate and the type of fitting. For a bedside lamp, a 30–40 cm shade is ideal, paired with a 5–7 W LED bulb (400–600 lumens, 2700–3000 K for warm light). Above a dining table, choose a 60–80 cm shade suspended 70–80 cm above the surface, with a 10–15 W bulb (800–1200 lumens, 3000–4000 K for a more neutral light).

In a living room, a rectangular lampshade fits larger table or floor lamps—opt for a 50–70 cm long shade, 20–30 cm high, with a 12–18 W bulb (1000–1500 lumens). For balance, the shade’s length should be around 1.5 times the width of the lamp base.

For ceiling lights, a rectangular lampshade illuminates spaces of 15–25 m² effectively. An 80 cm model with two 10 W LED bulbs provides even, general lighting. In bathrooms, check the IP rating and install at a minimum height of 2.10 m.

If you need an alternative for the ceiling, explore the rectangular ceiling lights collection for matching options.

How to coordinate a rectangular lampshade with your decor?

The colour and finish of your rectangular lampshade set the mood for the room. White or ecru shades maximise light output and complement any style, while black or anthracite versions create a bold contrast, directing light up and down for a more intimate feel.

For a striking look, pair a rectangular lampshade with a matching wall mirror. Rectangular mirrors enhance depth and structure while reflecting the diffused light.

In a modern living room, combine a fabric rectangular lampshade with a statement pendant to play with shapes and silhouettes. The designer pendants collection offers complementary models for a cohesive look.

For a warm and inviting feel, opt for natural materials and combine your rectangular lampshade with wooden or linen accessories. A plush rug or textured cushion enhances the cosy atmosphere, while a brushed metal base brings a contemporary edge.

To keep your lampshade looking its best, dust regularly using a soft cloth or fabric brush. Fabric shades can sometimes be spot cleaned with a dry eraser or specialised cleaner, while polyester versions wipe down easily with a damp sponge.

To mix up styles and uses, discover the designer lampshades range, featuring innovative shapes and finishes for every interior.
