We don’t always give glassware the attention it deserves. Yet the right glass transforms every sip — wine served in a fine, well-balanced glass tastes very different to that in a thick, heavy one. It’s not about snobbery: it’s down to physics and chemistry. The shape of a glass concentrates aromas, the thickness of the rim defines the feel on your lips, and the weight in your hand shapes the whole experience. Beyond function, a beautiful glass on a set table adds as much style as the tablecloth or plates. Water glasses, wine glasses, flutes, tumblers: which style for which drink?

The shape of a glass isn’t just tradition — it’s been refined over centuries of dining culture, perfectly matching form to function.

The water glass is the all-rounder. Tall, straight or slightly flared, holding about 300 to 400ml, it suits water, juice, soda or iced tea. It stays on the table from starter to dessert and its simple style pairs easily with any wine or champagne glass without disrupting the look.

Red wine glasses are wider, with a generous bowl to let wine breathe and aromas develop. Balloon or tulip shapes concentrate scents at the top of the glass. For bold, tannic wines, a large Bordeaux glass is ideal; for finer Burgundy, a narrower bowl preserves delicate aromas.

Hand-blown glass, recycled glass, crystal: which material?

Hand-blown glass is the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Every piece is unique — slight variations in thickness, tiny air bubbles, and organic shapes are hallmarks of the artisan process, not flaws. A mouth-blown glass brings presence and warmth that mass-produced glasses just cannot match. Use it for dining or as a decorative object — on an open shelf, it plays beautifully with the light.

Recycled glass — often with a soft green or amber tint from natural impurities — is both more eco-friendly and more characterful than standard clear glass. Its natural shades add warmth that suits organic, understated interiors. Durable and dishwasher safe for everyday life.

Crystal is the ultimate premium material. Modern, lead-free versions offer striking clarity, sparkle and the distinctive ring that sets crystal apart. Crystal glasses are finer, lighter and more brilliant than ordinary glass, but should generally be washed by hand to retain their shine and avoid limescale from the dishwasher.

Coloured, frosted or decorated glasses: bring personality to your table
