Their spherical shape diffuses light evenly, with no harsh shadows, making them a favourite for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. You’ll find globe lights as ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall lights or floor lamps, in diameters from 15 to 60 cm, with large XXL models also available. Globe lights come in opal glass, lacquered metal, stretched fabric or polycarbonate, each material influencing the quality and ambiance of the lighting. With compact formats and modular designs, they suit both low ceilings and larger, lofty spaces.

What materials are best for globe lights?

Opal glass: Opal glass is the benchmark for a globe light that diffuses soft, glare-free light. A 30 cm hand-blown glass globe gives optimal lighting for a 10 to 15 m² room using an LED bulb of 800 to 1200 lumens. Frosted glass hides the bulb and prevents halos. For added sophistication, some designs pair glass with brass or chrome.

Lacquered metal: Globe lights in lacquered metal—often finished in black, white or gold—bring bold, graphic style to modern or industrial spaces. Metal also enables openwork designs that play with light and shadow. A 20 cm metal globe with a 6 to 10 W LED bulb is perfect for a reading nook or hallway.

Stretched fabric: Less common, globe lights in stretched fabric over metal frame create a gentle, diffused glow—ideal for bedrooms or cosy living rooms. White or natural fabric emits a warm light (2700 to 3000 K), helping establish a relaxing mood. Just remember that fabric needs regular dusting.

What size and brightness should you choose for a globe light?

Globe lights suit any room, as long as you tailor the size and material. Use one as a central ceiling light or pendant above a coffee table in the living room. For dining rooms, a globe pendant of 40 to 50 cm diameter hung 80 cm above the table works well. In bedrooms, a small frosted glass globe (20 to 25 cm), used as a bedside table lamp or ceiling light, gives gentle, restful lighting.

Compact globe ceiling or wall lights (15 to 25 cm) are ideal for halls and corridors, brightening the space without clutter. In bathrooms, check the safety rating: models of at least IP44 are needed within 60 cm of a water source.
