Shower downlights : faites le bon choix

The right shower downlight combines safety and precision where it matters most.

Shower downlights are the essential lighting solution for wet rooms, where every detail counts. Designed to withstand humidity and splashing water, they feature a high protection rating, typically IP65 or IP44, for complete waterproofing. Sizes range from compact 6 cm downlights, perfect for small enclosures, to larger 12 cm models ideal for walk-in showers. Recessed or adjustable, shower downlights fit seamlessly into the ceiling or false ceiling, delivering focused beams without glare. Their main job: providing optimal visibility while meeting strict bathroom electrical safety standards.

Which type of shower downlight is best for your space?

Recessed downlights: Ideal for suspended or plasterboard ceilings, a recessed shower downlight needs a depth of 6 to 8 cm. Choose an IP65 model for installation directly above the shower zone. Recommended output is 400 to 600 lumens per downlight for functional, shadow-free lighting.

Adjustable downlights: When you need to highlight a shower wall or a niche, adjustable downlights let you direct the beam at a 30 or 45 degree angle. This flexibility is invaluable in large walk-in showers or bathrooms with glass partitions. Always check the IP rating—only some adjustable models reach IP65.

LED downlights: LED technology is a must for shower lighting, thanks to low energy consumption (3 to 7 W each) and a lifespan over 25,000 hours. The ideal colour temperature is between 3000K (warm white) and 4000K (neutral white), giving a natural light that stays true to skin tones and tiles. To explore more LED options for your bathroom, see our LED spotlights and projectors collection.

How many downlights do you need for a shower?

The number of shower downlights depends on the size of the area and ceiling height. For a standard 90 x 90 cm enclosure, one downlight of 400 to 600 lumens is enough. In a larger walk-in shower (120 x 200 cm), plan for two or three to ensure even coverage. Total wattage should not exceed 12 to 15 W to prevent glare. Install downlights at least 2.1 m above the floor to comply with regulations such as NF C 15-100, which requires IP65 in direct splash zones. For general bathroom lighting, pair your shower downlight with a bathroom ceiling light for a softer, complementary effect.

The ideal arrangement is to position the shower downlight directly above the water stream, avoiding tight groupings that cast shadows. For showers with glass panels, choose a narrow beam (30°) to concentrate light where needed without dazzling the user.

Finishes, care, and matching your decor

Chrome downlights: Chrome finishes pair perfectly with modern taps and stainless steel accessories. They resist corrosion and wipe clean with a soft cloth. For a fully coordinated look, see our range of chrome ceiling lights for the rest of your bathroom.

White downlights: Discreet and timeless, white downlights blend in with light ceilings and suit minimalist bathrooms. Maintenance is easy: a quick wipe with a damp sponge removes any limescale or steam marks.

Designer downlights: For a contemporary touch, some shower downlights come in square, rectangular, or matte finishes. These suit architectural bathrooms and bespoke projects. For more inspiration, explore our designer downlights selection.

The right shower downlight enhances your tiles, secures the space, and brings out the best in your bathroom’s design. For perfect harmony, match it with bathroom lighting tailored to every wet zone.
