Papier mâché ceiling lights : faites le bon choix

Light takes on shape and texture with the papier mâché ceiling light, a rare fusion of artisan craft and modern design.

The papier mâché chandelier makes a statement for anyone wanting to combine raw aesthetics with a soft, inviting glow. Made from recycled paper pulp that is moulded and dried, it offers an irregular surface—matt or slightly satin—that diffuses light gently. Sizes range from small 30 cm designs, ideal for a bedroom or hallway, up to XXL pendants of 80 cm for creating a sculptural focal point in a living or dining room. This lightweight light (often under 2 kg) is easy to fit on any ceiling, even older or delicate ones. Its role: to provide gentle, diffused light without glare, while bringing a standout decorative feature to your space.

What shapes and finishes are available?

Globe ceiling lights: The classic spherical shape, from 30 to 60 cm, remains the most popular. It provides 360° lighting—perfect for living areas or entrances. The thickness of the paper affects translucency: the thicker it is (up to 250 g/m²), the softer and more filtered the light.

Cloud ceiling lights: Inspired by organic forms, this style plays with irregular, flowing shapes. Sizes range from 40 to 100 cm, making a dramatic statement above a table. It pairs beautifully with airy, modern interiors.

Flat ceiling lights: More discreet, these spread out in width (up to 70 cm) but are shallow (15 to 20 cm). This makes them perfect for low ceilings or narrow spaces like hallways or kitchens.

Finishes include natural white, pastel tones (beige, light grey), and sometimes mineral-inspired patinas. Some designs are hand-painted, while others leave the raw paper texture visible for an authentic look. The standard IP20 rating suits all rooms except wet areas.

Choosing the right size and light output

The right diameter depends on the size of your room. For spaces of 10 to 15 m², a papier mâché ceiling light of 40 to 50 cm is recommended. For rooms over 20 m², choose 60 to 80 cm for even lighting. The fitting should be installed between 210 and 230 cm from the floor to avoid direct eye contact with the bulb.

In terms of brightness, an E27 LED bulb of 8 to 12 W (800 to 1200 lumens) is plenty for a cosy atmosphere. For dining rooms, choose 2700 to 3000 K colour temperature to show off the paper texture and enhance food colours. In bedrooms, a 6 to 8 W bulb (600 to 800 lumens) is ideal, especially if there are additional light sources.

For design lovers, papier mâché lights blend effortlessly with contemporary interiors or minimalist spaces, but they also suit boho or Scandinavian homes thanks to their natural material and airy look.

Care and decorative pairings

Papier mâché ceiling lights need minimal care: a feather duster or dry cloth is enough to remove dust. Avoid water or cleaning sprays, as the paper is sensitive to moisture. For rooms exposed to steam (kitchens, bathrooms), choose a model treated with waterproof varnish, or opt for a paper flush ceiling light instead.

This type of light goes well with natural materials like pale wood, linen, or rattan. For a harmonious look, pair it with a papier mâché pendant in another room, or with matt ceramic accessories. In a living room, it works beautifully alongside a thick wool rug or textured cushions for a cosy vibe.

Finally, papier mâché ceiling lights are a smart choice for children's rooms due to their lightness and the absence of sharp materials. For safety, pick a smaller model (30 to 40 cm) and a low-heat LED bulb.
