Compact and often recessed, they come in round or square shapes from 3 to 10 cm, so they fit discreetly into risers, skirting boards or side walls. Their main purpose: to provide effective step lighting that doesn’t dazzle, while enhancing your staircase’s architecture. The most efficient models use 1 to 5 watts each, producing 80 to 300 lumens—enough to guide your way without casting harsh shadows. Choose from warm white (2700-3000K) for a cosy effect or neutral white (4000K) for optimal visibility, depending on your desired ambience and interior style.

Which type of staircase spotlight should you choose?

Recessed spotlights: These are ideal for a flawless finish, installing directly into the stair tread or riser. Opt for 3 to 6 cm spotlights for narrow stairs or up to 10 cm versions for wider steps. Designer spotlights: For contemporary spaces, designer staircase spotlights stand out with finishes like brushed stainless steel, matt black or gold brass, and minimalist shapes. How high and how far apart should you install staircase spotlights?

For the best guidance, spotlights are generally installed 15–20 cm above each step, on the riser or side wall. Opt for one spotlight every 2–3 steps for a subtle effect, or every step for maximum safety—especially in dark areas or households with children or elderly people. A light output of 80–150 lumens per spotlight normally suffices for homes; for wide or public stairs, go up to 200–300 lumens. Always aim the beam towards the tread, never at eye level, to avoid glare. Asymmetric beam models work especially well for spiral or turning stairs.

For timber staircases, choose slim-rim designs to preserve the structure. For concrete or plaster, models with recessed boxes make installation and upkeep easier. Outdoors, pick IP65-rated spotlights with working temperatures of –20°C to +40°C.

How can you coordinate staircase spotlights with the rest of your lighting?
