Motion sensor lights are a smart, technical and stylish choice for any space that needs automatic, precise and reliable lighting. These intelligent fittings use an infrared or microwave sensor, able to detect movement from 3 to 10 metres depending on the model, with a detection angle of 120 to 180°. Perfect for corridors, staircases, entrances or wardrobes, motion sensor lights prevent lights being left on and help to reduce energy consumption. Choose from compact ceiling lights (diameter 18 to 30 cm), discreet wall lights (depth 6 to 10 cm), recessed spotlights (diameter 7 to 12 cm), or portable lamps for passageways. Recommended output: 6 to 18W LED (500 to 1800 lumens) for instant visibility without glare. Colour temperature: opt for 3000K for a warm feel, 4000K for a neutral effect—ideal for circulation areas.

Which type of motion sensor light to choose?

Motion sensor ceiling lights: Ideal for corridors, garages or utility rooms, they spread light evenly. A 24 cm, 12W LED model will light a room of 8 to 12 m² effectively. Choose IP44 for damp or dusty areas.

Motion sensor wall lights: Install 1.5 to 2 metres above the floor for optimal detection. Some models allow you to set the timer (10 seconds to 5 minutes) and adjust the sensor sensitivity. For a narrow hallway, an 8W LED wall light is enough, while an entrance typically needs 12W.

Motion sensor spotlights: Recessed or surface-mounted, they're perfect for specific areas like stair treads or cupboards. A 6 to 8 cm, 5W LED spotlight lights a step or dark corner effectively. When installing several, space them 80 to 120 cm apart depending on the layout.

Where to install motion sensor lights and which output to choose?

For a corridor 4 to 8 m long, choose a 12 to 18W LED motion sensor ceiling light, mounted centrally or at each end to avoid dark spots. For stairs, opt for motion sensor spotlights every metre, 5W each, to safely light every step without over-lighting. For an entrance, a 10 to 15W LED wall light with a sensor, installed 1.8 m above the floor, gives instant lighting as you open the door.

For children's bedrooms or dressing rooms, a low output motion sensor light (6 to 8W LED, 400 to 600 lumens) prevents night-time glare. In wet rooms, ensure an IP44 rating at minimum and IP65 for bathrooms.

For extra comfort, pair with a motion sensor LED bedside lamp for night-time use in children's rooms or for late-night trips, directing the light just where it's needed.

Installation and maintenance tips

The mounting height directly affects the detection zone: for ceiling lights, ideal height is 2.2 to 2.5 m; for wall lights, 1.5 to 2 m. Angle the sensor towards the walkway, avoiding heat sources or drafts that could cause false triggering. Some models allow you to set the lux threshold so the lamp only switches on when ambient light is low.

Maintenance is easy: dust the sensor regularly with a dry cloth to keep sensitivity high. Do not use abrasives on optical components. Integrated LED models last over 20,000 hours, meaning little need for intervention. If a replacement is needed, check the LED module is compatible (it is often non-replaceable in compact fittings).
