Patio paving slabs : faites le bon choix

A patio starts with its floor — and the floor starts with the right choice of paving slab.

It's an obvious point that's often overlooked when designing an outdoor space. We focus on furniture, lighting, plants, barbecue — and leave the floor as a last-minute technical afterthought. Yet the patio paving slab sets the mood for everything else: it defines the overall look of the space, its practical use day to day, its long-term durability and the maintenance it will need. A terrace well tiled with carefully chosen paving needs little else to look great. A poorly matched covering will cause ongoing problems — slippery when wet, hard to clean, prone to early wear or simply clashing with the rest of your garden. Which material should you choose for patio slabs?

This is the first and most important decision. The material determines the look, durability, maintenance and installation method — all of which have a direct impact on your satisfaction in the long term.

Composite timber is one of the most popular materials for contemporary patios. It combines the visual warmth and texture of real wood with much better resistance to UV, moisture, wood-boring insects and temperature swings. Unlike real wood, composite timber won't crack or warp with frost, doesn't need yearly oiling and won't go blue with mould. Our composite slabs come in a range of tones — pale oak, warm teak, anthracite grey — with grooved or brushed finishes that mimic real wood. They're clipped onto a supporting frame, requiring no glue or special tools, and can be dismantled easily if needed.

Porcelain is the technical benchmark for paved patio tiles. Extremely resistant to abrasion, staining, frost and UV, it doesn't fade, scratch, and just needs water for cleaning. Outdoor-grade porcelain (usually 20mm thick, versus 10mm for interiors) can be laid directly on sand, on pedestals, or on adjustable supports without adhesive. Ours realistically mimic natural stone, weathered wood, polished concrete or slate. Their textured, anti-slip surface is specially treated for outdoor use — passing slip-resistance tests even when wet.

Natural stone — slate, schist, quartzite, sandstone, travertine — brings a unique authenticity no imitation can fully match. Every slab is unique, with its own veins, toning and gentle surface irregularities. The result is a terrace full of character, that matures with age and gains charm instead of losing quality. Natural stone, however, demands more care: regular water-repellent treatments for porous stones, careful snow clearing in winter to avoid freeze-thaw cracking, cleaning tailored to each stone’s porosity. It's a noble material that rewards care with lasting beauty and longevity.

Wood-effect PVC and synthetic slabs are the most affordable segment. Lightweight, easy to lay and resistant to moisture and insects, they're ideal for balconies, covered patios or shaded spaces with little direct sun. The look has improved dramatically in recent years — the best now convincingly imitate timber from a distance — but durability and finish are still below composite timber for patios in full sun.

Clip-together or fixed slabs: which installation suits your terrace?

The installation method often depends on your patio setup and your level of DIY skill. There are two main approaches.

Clip-together slabs on a slatted base are the most accessible for non-expert DIYers. They slot together with built-in clips, with no adhesive or mortar. Simply lay them over an existing terrace — solid concrete, sound tiles — or over an adjustable pedestal system. It's fast, tidy, and reversible: if you move or change your mind, they come up as easily as they were laid. This style is perfect for renters, balconies or roof terraces where weight is limited and glued installation is not an option. The key detail: leave gaps between slabs for water drainage, but not so large as to make walking uncomfortable.

Mortared or sand-set slabs are the classic, long-lasting method. They require proper surface preparation — levelling, drainage slope, and outdoor-grade mortar — and more skill to lay. The result is more stable, longer-lasting, and lets you use heavier, premium slabs (natural stone, thick porcelain). This installation is recommended for permanent projects where you won't be removing the paving, and on large areas where stability is a top priority.

Slabs on adjustable pedestals combine the advantages of both systems. Raised on height-adjustable supports, they adapt to uneven or sloping surfaces, allow access to cables and pipes under the paving, and can be lifted and relaid individually without dismantling the whole terrace. This is the go-to solution for rooftop terraces, commercial areas, or any space where access under the paving is needed.

How to choose the size and layout of patio slabs

The shape and size of slabs dramatically affect the final look. As a rule: the larger the slabs, the more spacious the terrace appears. Small tiles (30x30 cm) break up the space visually and can look cluttered on large terraces. Larger sizes — 60x60 cm or 60x90 cm — create a sense of space, modernity and care.

For small patios and balconies (under 15 m²), 40x40 cm or 50x50 cm slabs work well. For medium terraces (15 to 40 m²), 60x60 cm or 60x90 cm are ideal. For large patios (over 40 m²), 80x80 cm or 100x100 cm give a highly contemporary, monolithic effect that's popular in modern architecture.

Staggered installation — with joints offset row by row, like brickwork — creates a more dynamic look and hides irregularities in slab size. Straight installation — joints aligned — is more geometric and contemporary. Diagonal installation at 45° is more complex but visually expands rectangular areas by stretching the perspective.

Patio slab maintenance: what you need to know

Terrace upkeep depends almost entirely on your material choice.

Composite timber only needs an annual clean with a pressure washer or brush and a specialist cleaner to remove moss and lichen in damp areas. No oiling or treatments needed — just simple cleaning to keep it looking its best.

Porcelain is the easiest to maintain: a rinse with water is enough for everyday mess. For stubborn stains — barbecue oil, pine resin — a neutral household degreaser usually does the trick. Avoid acidic cleaners which can damage the grout.

Natural stone calls for more regular care: water-repellent treatment every two to three years for porous stones, cleaning matched to the particular type, and moss removal as needed. In return, it matures gracefully, building character that synthetic materials can't match.
