Paper ceiling lights : faites le bon choix

The soft glow of a paper ceiling light evokes the gentle calm of a misty morning, subtle and enveloping.

A paper ceiling light stands out as a decorative lighting solution that’s both lightweight and graphic, ideal for creating a soothing atmosphere in any room of the home. Its paper shade, usually mounted on a discreet metal frame, comes in a wide range of forms: classic globes from 30 to 60 cm in diameter, oval or cloud-shaped designs, and modular compositions for larger spaces. This ceiling light is loved for its ability to softly diffuse light, offering even illumination without glare—perfect for living rooms, bedrooms or offices. Paper ceiling lights suit both contemporary interiors and décor inspired by Japanese or Scandinavian styles, thanks to their clean lines and neutral shades.

What types of paper are used for ceiling lights?

Rice paper: This traditional Asian material is highly valued for its translucency and durability. A rice paper ceiling light produces a soft glow, making it ideal for restful spaces. The typical weight varies from 30 to 60 gsm, ensuring a lightweight yet long-lasting shade.

Washi paper: With its distinct texture, Japanese washi offers a lightly fibrous finish and a particularly natural light diffusion. It’s often used for paper ceiling lights in organic or geometric shapes, especially for larger models with diameters from 40 to 80 cm.

Classic white paper: Smooth white paper designs suit minimalist or Nordic interiors. Choose from single or double-layer options to adjust the lighting intensity. For a harmonious look, pair them with white ceiling lights in other materials.

Coloured or printed paper: Some paper ceiling lights feature graphic patterns or pastel shades—ideal for personalising a child’s room or a creative workspace. The inks used are typically water-based and free from harmful emissions.

What size and wattage for each room?

The size of your paper ceiling light depends on the area you need to light. For a bedroom of 10 to 12 sqm, a 40 cm diameter model is sufficient when paired with an LED bulb of 800 to 1000 lumens (8 to 12 W). In a 20 to 25 sqm living room, opt for a 60 cm ceiling light, or group several pendants for a cloud-like effect. A colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K creates a warm ambience without too much yellow. Avoid paper ceiling lights in damp rooms and choose a bathroom ceiling light with at least IP44 protection instead.

Mounting height is also key: install your paper ceiling light at least 210 cm above the floor to prevent contact, especially in walkways. In children’s rooms, choose flat or semi-flush models for added safety. For a gentler glow, use a dimmable bulb and avoid going over 15 W LED, as too much power may eventually yellow the paper shade.

In Nordic-inspired interiors, paper ceiling lights look great with a Scandinavian ceiling light in wood or metal for a play of textures.

Care tips and decorating ideas

Paper ceiling lights need delicate care: dust them regularly using an anti-static duster or a hair dryer on a cool setting. Avoid any contact with water or cleaning products, which can distort or stain the paper. For marks, dab gently with a dry cloth—never rub.

Styling-wise, a paper ceiling light pairs beautifully with other lights in natural fibres or fabric. To create an inviting, cocooning feel, team it with a matching wall light or coordinating pendants. In a living area, combine it with a cloud ceiling light for a more ethereal effect.

For a design-led look, mix your paper ceiling light with glass or metal pieces, but stick to a calm colour palette to avoid overwhelming the space.
