In a wardrobe, the light needs to be crisp and even, with no shadows cast on shelves or in drawers. Compact ceiling lights, adjustable spotlights, and, for spacious wardrobes, lighting tracks are the most suitable options. The ideal colour temperature is between 4000 and 5000 Kelvin for faithful colour rendering, while a luminous flux of 800 to 1500 lumens per square metre ensures perfect visibility, even in every corner. Well-chosen wardrobe lighting prevents style mishaps and brings out every detail of your collection.

What are the best types of lights for a practical wardrobe?

LED ceiling lights: For wardrobes between 4 and 8 m², choose an LED ceiling light from 18 to 24 W giving 1600 to 2200 lumens. Ultra-slim models (less than 5 cm thick) fit perfectly in compact spaces without blocking cupboard doors. Opt for a colour rendering index (CRI) above 90 to see textiles accurately.

Adjustable spotlights: Recessed spotlights or track spotlights let you light storage areas precisely. One 5 to 7 W spotlight (400 to 600 lumens) every 80 cm gives an even distribution. Point them at rails and shelves to eliminate clothing shadows. Wide beam models (60° to 120°) are best for larger areas.

LED wall lights: For walk-in wardrobes or corridor-style spaces, an LED wall light of 8 to 12 W (700 to 1000 lumens) installed 1.8 m from the floor effectively illuminates side areas. Choose indirect lighting models to avoid glare in front of a mirror.

What brightness and colour temperature to choose for wardrobe lighting?

The brightness you need depends on the size and layout. For a closed wardrobe of 2 to 4 m², a source with 1000 to 1500 lumens is enough. For areas over 6 m², use multiple lights to reach a total of 2000 to 3000 lumens. The colour temperature should be between 4000 K (neutral white) and 5000 K (cool white) for true-to-life shades with no yellow or blue cast. Avoid bulbs under 3500 K, as they distort dark and pastel tones.

For wardrobes with mirrors, front or side lighting at face level avoids shadows below the chin or eyes. A strip light or wall light with 500 to 800 lumens is ideal here. Dimmable models let you adjust brightness to match the available natural light.

In shared or family wardrobes, use several lights to avoid dark spots, especially in corners or beneath low shelves. Lighting tracks and cable-mounted spotlights offer the flexibility to adapt the lighting as the layout changes.

How to match your wardrobe lighting to the room style?

Designer ceiling lights: For modern wardrobes, choose minimalist

Spotlights: In industrial or minimalist wardrobes, black or chrome metal spotlights blend in perfectly. Adjustable models allow you to adapt the beam as the seasons or your clothing layout changes. A rail of 3 to 5 spotlights suits a line of 2 to 3 metres.

Mirrors: Pair your wardrobe lighting with a wall mirror to enhance the light and make trying on easier. A 120 x 40 cm mirror facing the light source visually enlarges the space and improves colour perception. Backlit LED mirrors (300 to 500 lumens) add extra comfort for choosing accessories.

For wardrobes in light wood or a Scandinavian finish, choose white metal or frosted glass lights to reinforce a bright atmosphere. In classic interiors, brass wall lights or fabric shade ceiling lights add a warm touch without compromising lighting quality.

Wardrobe light maintenance is easy: dust the diffusers every month to preserve brightness, and check the LED bulbs regularly to avoid any drop in output. Well-maintained lighting preserves your clothes’ colours, avoiding fading from light that is too warm or dim.
