Adjustable arm lamps : faites le bon choix

An adjustable arm lamp provides adaptable lighting to suit your pace and needs, without compromising on style.

Versatile and precise, an adjustable arm lamp is an essential for any workspace, reading nook or creative studio. With adjustable arms and pivoting heads, it gives you complete control of your lighting, directing the beam exactly where you want it. Options range from single to double-arm models, with reaches from 30 to 90 cm and lamp heads that swivel 180° or 360°. Choose a design to suit your interior: desktop, clamp-on or wall-mounted, ideal for desks, bedside tables or studios. These lamps combine functionality and aesthetics, from industrial metal designs to wooden or brass finishes, perfect for demanding interiors.

What are the best materials and finishes for a premium adjustable arm lamp?

Steel or aluminium: Adjustable arm lamps in metal are robust and stable, perfect for frequent use. Black or white lacquered steel, anodised aluminium or satin chrome offer durability and a contemporary look. Professional models often include a weighted base (1.5 to 3 kg) for stability and tubular arms with a 1.5 to 2.5 cm diameter for rigidity.

Solid wood: For a warmer touch, solid wood lamps (oak, beech, walnut) provide natural style and lasting quality. The joints are reinforced with metal inserts for flexibility, with a matt varnish to protect and make cleaning easy.

Brass or copper finishes: Fans of vintage or art deco style choose brushed brass or patinated copper adjustable lamps. These finishes, often combined with conical or spherical shades, add sophistication to a desk or library. For a chic look, pair with an art deco floor lamp in the same room.

Which brightness and colour temperature for each use?

The right adjustable arm lamp depends on the size of your space and your activity. For a desk 120 x 60 cm, choose an LED bulb of 6 to 9 W (equivalent to 60-75 W halogen), producing 600 to 900 lumens. For reading, a warm white colour temperature of 2700-3000 K is comfortable, while a neutral white (4000 K) is better for detailed or technical work.

Mounting height matters: a desktop adjustable lamp should sit 40-50 cm above your desk, while a wall lamp should be installed 120-130 cm from the floor for optimal directional light. Clamp-on models attach to surfaces 1-5 cm thick for great flexibility.

For shared workspaces or studios, consider pairing with desk lamps to increase light sources and avoid shadows.

How to use an adjustable arm lamp in each room?

Office: An adjustable arm lamp is essential for an ergonomic workspace. Opt for a double-arm version to cover a larger area, with a swivel head and dimmer. Lamps with a colour rendering index (CRI) over 90 are recommended for graphic or photo editing work.

Bedroom: Over the bed, an adjustable lamp is a smart alternative to a standard wall light. Choose a long-arm wall version (50-70 cm) to direct light without glare. An integrated switch on the head or arm is ideal for nighttime use. For a coordinated look, match with a bedside reading lamp or an adjustable wall light in the same finish.

Workshop or creative space: Clamp lamps are ideal for compact or flexible worktops. Look for 800 to 1200 lumens and a spring arm for easy adjustment. To complete overall lighting, install adjustable spotlights on the ceiling.

For care, dust joints regularly and check screws for smooth movement. Clean metal with a slightly damp microfibre cloth; use dry dusting and occasional polish on wood models.
