Paper floor lamps : faites le bon choix

The light from a paper floor lamp evokes the softness of a misty morning, subtle and enveloping.

A paper floor lamp becomes a statement piece for those seeking a soft, cosy atmosphere with a minimalist design. Its lightweight structure, often featuring a metal or wooden base and a shade in washi paper, rice paper or cellulose, diffuses a gentle glow that's perfect for relaxing spaces. Formats range from tall column floor lamps (120–180 cm), ideal for shaping a reading nook, to more compact tripod designs (90–130 cm) suited to smaller rooms. A paper floor lamp fits beautifully in a modern living room, a minimalist bedroom or a calm office, bringing a warm, organic touch without overwhelming your decor.

What types of paper are used in paper floor lamps?

Washi paper: From Japanese tradition, washi paper is known for its strength and translucency. A washi paper lamp gives even, glare-free light. Typical weight: 30 to 60 g/m². This material is compatible with LED bulbs up to 12W (around 1000 lumens), with no risk of yellowing.

Rice paper: With a more textured finish, it creates beautiful shadow effects. A rice paper floor lamp, often with a fine bamboo or metal frame, works well in natural or Scandinavian-style interiors. Use a bulb of 2700 to 3000K to keep the light warm.

Cellulose paper: Thicker (up to 120 g/m²), it allows for sculptural shapes and defined folds—ideal for a designer paper floor lamp. This type can be used with bulbs up to 15W LED, but needs a little airflow to avoid overheating.

If you’d like an airy effect with a touch of fabric, explore our fabric floor lamp collection for models offering soft, varied light diffusion.

What size and wattage for a paper floor lamp in your room?

Choose your paper floor lamp based on the room size and function. For a living room of 20 to 30 m², go for a lamp 150 to 180 cm high with a 10 to 15W LED bulb (800–1200 lumens) for ample ambient lighting that doesn't overpower. In a bedroom, a 120 to 140 cm lamp with a 6 to 9W bulb (500–700 lumens) creates a relaxing, restful mood.

The colour temperature sets the mood: 2700K gives a warm glow, 4000K is more neutral. Avoid halogen bulbs, as they get too hot for paper shades. For perfect harmony in a bedroom, pair your paper floor lamp with bedside lamps in natural materials.

For a home office or hallway, a compact paper floor lamp (90–120 cm) with a 5 to 7W bulb is usually enough. Place the lamp at least 30 cm from the wall to prevent harsh shadows. For busy areas, choose one with a foot switch for added convenience.

Care tips and style ideas

A paper floor lamp needs some care: dust regularly with an anti-static duster and spot clean with a dry cloth. Avoid water or household cleaners. To keep the shade bright white, position your lamp away from direct sunlight.

Paper floor lamps team beautifully with pale wood, natural textiles and mirrors to amplify light. For a coordinated look, combine with paper pendant lights in the same room, or a paper ceiling light for smooth, even illumination from floor to ceiling.

In a Japanese or minimalist interior, a paper floor lamp pairs perfectly with our Japanese lighting selection, enhancing pure lines and natural textures.
