Of course, it can be filled with fresh flowers, pampas grass, a few dried branches or eucalyptus stems. But it can just as easily remain empty, set on a sideboard or console, and play a full part in your decorative scheme needing nothing more than simply being there. Ceramic, glass or concrete vase: which material should you choose?

The material of a vase defines its character, texture, the light it captures and the mood it creates in a room. It’s often the first thing you consider—even before shape or colour.

Ceramic is the most versatile and rich material. Depending on the technique—glossy glaze, matte finish, hand-thrown or moulded—it can be smooth and precise or, conversely, irregular and artisanal. A glossy terracotta ceramic vase has a very different look to a sage-green glazed stoneware vase, yet both are technically ceramic. This variety makes it the most represented material in our collection, with models to suit every style. Ceramic is also remarkably durable: a well-made stoneware vase lasts for decades without losing its colour or shape.

Glass offers a property no other material can replicate: transparency. A mouth-blown glass vase reveals the stems, trapped air bubbles and subtle colour variations within. Amber or smoked glass filters light differently to clear glass, bringing a warmer, softer atmosphere. Each mouth-blown vase is unique in shape, with artisanal variations—this is precisely what gives them value.

Concrete brings a raw, contemporary feel that contrasts beautifully with the delicacy of a flower or branch. Its grainy texture, soft grey-beige or blue-toned colour and weight all contribute to an industrial look that’s highly sought after in modern interiors. Concrete vases pair wonderfully with raw woods, black metals and bold-leafed plants.

Metal—brushed brass, copper, stainless steel, wrought iron—produces vases that catch and reflect light with an intensity other materials can’t match. A brushed gold brass vase by a sunny window will reflect light differently to how it looks in artificial evening light. It’s an object that changes with the time of day.

What size and shape should you choose for your vase?

Size and shape are more than just an aesthetic choice—they determine what you can display inside and where you can place your vase.

The large floor vase—from 40 or 50 cm in height—is an independent decorative feature, almost sculptural. Set in a corner, entrance or beside a sofa, it fills the space with a presence that no small object can match. It’s ideally suited to pampas grass, tall branches, dried reeds or long-stemmed flowers. Its base should be stable enough for its contents—check its height-to-base ratio, especially if filling with water and fresh flowers.

The medium vase—between 20 and 40 cm—is the most versatile format. Perfect on a coffee table, console, sideboard or shelf, it suits most settings. It can hold a reasonably sized bouquet or be displayed empty as a decorative piece.

The small vase—under 15 cm—often has more personality than you’d think. Alone, it may seem modest. Grouped with other small vases of varying shapes and heights, it creates a lively, characterful arrangement on a shelf or console. This size is ideal for wildflowers, short branches or dried flowers.

As for shapes, a few main types stand out. The cylindrical or tubular shape is the most universal—perfect for long-stemmed flowers and suitable for every style. The spherical or globe shape is bolder, less practical for some bouquets, but striking when displayed empty. Organic shapes—asymmetrical, nature-inspired curves—bring the most personality and impact to a display.

How to style your vases?

A single vase can be enough—provided it has the presence to shine on its own. But more often, it’s through groupings that vases really come into their own.

A few tips: vary the heights, rather than choosing all vases in the same size. Mix materials—a matte ceramic vase alongside mouth-blown glass and a metal vase creates a rich, interesting composition. Mix up the shapes too: a cylinder, a sphere and an organic line together make for a visually dynamic trio. But stick to a coherent colour palette—two or three harmonious shades—to avoid a cluttered look.

The foliage you put in your vases (or what you leave them empty) adds just as much to your interiors as the vases themselves. Pampas grass in a large beige ceramic vase, a few eucalyptus stems in amber glass, a dried flower bouquet in a small stoneware vase—every combination brings a different mood.
