Wicker lamp shades : faites le bon choix

The filtered light of a wicker lamp shade brings effortless natural style to refined interiors.

A wicker lamp shade is a standout choice for anyone seeking a warm, inviting glow that doesn’t compromise on quality. Woven from natural plant fibres, these shades come in cone, drum or globe shapes, with diameters from 20 to 60 cm—just right for bedside lamps, floor lamps or pendant lights. Lightweight (around 200 to 400 g depending on size), wicker offers gentle light diffusion to create a soothing atmosphere with reduced glare. Its open weave delivers striking shadow effects while allowing airflow around the bulb and helps prevent overheating.

Which sizes and styles of wicker lamp shade should you choose?

Cone lamp shade: Perfect for table lamps, this shape focuses light downwards. A 30–40 cm diameter suits a bedside or desk lamp, while a 50 cm model is ideal for a floor lamp. Herringbone or spiral weaves enhance the graphic light effect.

Drum lamp shade: Ideal for pendant lights or ceiling fittings, a drum shade spreads light evenly. Choose a diameter of 40–60 cm for living spaces of 15–25 m². The density of the weave affects transparency: a tight weave for a softer effect, a looser weave for more brightness.

Globe lamp shade: This spherical design, often used as a central pendant, offers 360° illumination. A 35–50 cm diameter works well for living or dining rooms. Natural, whitewashed or lightly aged finishes complement Scandinavian, boho or Mediterranean interiors.

For a more structured effect, wicker lamp shades can be combined with discreet metal frames for extra durability. Some models support LED bulbs up to 15 W (equivalent to 1200 lumens), providing enough light for rooms of 10–15 m².

If you want a more detailed look, the rattan lamp shade collection offers finer weaving and more intricate patterns—but keeps the same natural feel.

How powerful and how high should a wicker lamp shade be?

The necessary bulb depends on the weave density and the lamp’s purpose. For a bedside lamp, a 4–6 W LED bulb (400–600 lumens) is enough, while a central pendant needs 10–15 W LED (1000–1500 lumens) for general lighting. Opt for a warm colour temperature, 2700–3000 K, to enhance wicker’s cosy glow.

The installation height depends on the setting. Over a table, suspend the wicker shade 70–80 cm above the surface to avoid glare. For ceiling lights, allow at least 2 m from the floor to the base of the shade for easy movement. On a floor lamp, a 40 cm tall shade placed 1.5 m from the floor provides effective ambient lighting.

For large rooms, grouping several wicker shades in different sizes lets you layer the lighting and structure the space attractively. Floor lamp styles from the collection offer an elegant solution for reading nooks and spacious living areas.

How do you care for and coordinate a wicker lamp shade?

Cleaning a wicker shade is simple: just dust regularly with a soft brush or dry cloth. For stains, use a damp cloth for spot-cleaning, but never soak the fibres. Wicker dislikes excessive humidity—so avoid very damp rooms like bathrooms unless specially treated.

Wicker lamp shades pair beautifully with wooden lighting, natural fabrics or decorative accessories made of plant fibres. For a perfect match, explore the wicker lights range, which includes wicker pendants, floor lamps and wall lights.

In a bedroom, a wicker lamp shade creates a gentle, cocooning mood, especially with a ceramic or light-wood bedside lamp. In a living room, it works with both minimalist decor and boho interiors, letting you play with different textures and tones.
