A plant pot cover does exactly what it says: it covers. But the best ones do much more than that.

A plant pot cover is not a planter. It does not have a drainage hole, is not designed to be filled with soil directly, and is not intended for planting. Its purpose is to hold an existing pot — the one your plant is already growing in — and hide it under a more beautiful, décor-friendly outer layer. This small detail makes all the difference: no more exposed black plastic or basic terracotta, no more awkward saucers, no more mismatched pots in the same space. Instead, you have a carefully chosen material, an attractive shape and a visual harmony between plant and pot — suddenly, your plant takes on a new look.

Choosing your plant pot cover: material, style and size

The first thing to consider is size. The cover should be just a bit wider than the pot inside — typically 2 to 3 cm more in diameter, to allow for an easy fit and a bit of space for any condensation. If the cover is too snug, the pot won’t fit; if it’s too loose, you’ll see a noticeable gap, which spoils the look. Measure the diameter and height of your existing pot before buying.

The second factor is material, which sets the mood. The most common and versatile is the glazed ceramic plant pot cover. It’s moisture-resistant, easy to clean, and comes in a wide range of colours and finishes. A matte forest green cover around a pothos, a glossy milky white cover under a cactus — these simple matches always work. The concrete cover is great for graphic, structured plants — cacti, agave, sansevieria — with strong shapes that pair beautifully with minimalist materials. The wicker or rattan cover is the warmest and most organic choice. It’s especially suited to large or trailing plants — ficus, monstera, long pothos — in natural or boho-inspired rooms. Its airy structure also allows for some airflow around the pot, which benefits most plants. The metal cover — brass, copper, galvanised steel — brings a contemporary, refined touch and looks great in minimalist or industrial interiors.

Plant pot cover with or without saucer?

This is both a practical and a style choice. A cover without a saucer works if your inner pot already has its own saucer, or for plants watered from below. A cover with an integrated saucer is more self-contained — it catches excess watering and protects the surface underneath. This is especially useful on wood floors, wooden shelving or coffee tables where moisture can cause damage.

Some covers have a built-in water reservoir with level indicator. These let you water less often and more precisely — perfect if you travel or tend to forget watering. The plant will draw water from the reservoir as needed, reducing the risk of overwatering.

Grouping plant pot covers: how to create a harmonious display

A single plant in a stylish cover is good. A group of plants in coordinating covers creates a real feature. Consistency is key: the covers don’t need to match, but they should have something in common — the same material (all ceramic), the same colour palette (all neutrals), or a shared style (all handmade). Mixing a wicker cover, a concrete one and a gold metal one without any common thread will just look random.

For a great display, vary the height of the plants, not the covers — pots on the floor can be the same height and the plant shapes create levels. Combine foliage — a broad-leafed plant next to one with fine leaves, a trailing plant beside an upright one — and your collection will have depth and energy.
