Original chandeliers : faites le bon choix

An original chandelier transforms any space into a focal point, acting like a suspended luminous sculpture.

Original chandeliers stand out in interior decor by combining practical lighting with bold visual appeal. Distinctive for their unexpected shapes, innovative materials or asymmetrical designs, they break away from traditional codes. Whether crafted from laser-cut metal, mouth-blown glass, sculpted wood or pleated fabric, each original chandelier becomes a statement piece, truly structuring the room. Sizes range from compact 40 cm chandeliers, ideal for an entrance, to XXL models over 120 cm, perfect for double-height living rooms. Hanging height, usually 60 to 120 cm from the ceiling, directly affects how the space feels and how light is distributed. An original chandelier is more than just a light fitting: it sets the style, guides movement and shapes the mood depending on the chosen colour temperature (from 2700K for a warm glow to 4000K for a more neutral brightness).

Which materials are best for an original chandelier?

Metal chandeliers: Steel, brass or aluminium models display clean lines and a variety of finishes (brushed, gold, matt black). An original metal chandelier may feature articulated arms, geometric forms or laser-cut details. For a striking look, choose a 60 to 90 cm diameter in a 20 to 30 m² dining room. Maintenance is simply regular dusting with a microfibre cloth.

Glass chandeliers: Blown, opal or coloured glass offers unique plays of transparency and reflections. An original glass chandelier often features multiple bulbs (up to 12 G9 or E14), achieving a total output of 2000 to 4000 lumens. Perfect for living rooms, pair with glass ceiling lights for visual coherence. View the glass chandelier collection.

Wooden chandeliers: Light woods (oak, birch) or dark (walnut, teak) add natural warmth. An original wooden chandelier, often openwork or sculpted, creates gentle, inviting light. Select a 50 to 80 cm diameter for a bedroom or reading nook. Clean using a soft duster, avoiding harsh cleaners.

Fabric or feather chandeliers: Pleated fabric, linen or feather options create a soft, cloud-like effect and reduce glare. Position an original fabric chandelier 75 cm above a table for visual comfort. For a gentle ambience, use an LED bulb of 8 to 12 W (800 to 1200 lumens). Discover feather chandeliers.

How to choose an original chandelier for each room

Choosing your original chandelier depends on the ceiling height, room size and the space’s use. In a 30 m² living room with a 2.7 m ceiling, a model 80 to 100 cm wide, hung 90 cm from the ceiling, gives uniform lighting. For dining rooms, aim for chandelier diameter = table width + 20 cm for ideal visual balance. In bedrooms, opt for a 50 to 70 cm original chandelier, installed at 2.1 m above the floor to avoid knocks.

Adjust the brightness as needed: allow for 100 to 150 lumens/m² in a lounge (so 3000 to 4500 lumens for a 30 m² space), 80 to 100 lumens/m² for bedrooms. Dimmable models let you set the mood at any moment. For bathrooms, check for a protection rating of at least IP44 and select a compact design, positioned outside direct wet zones.

For contemporary decor, team your original chandelier with designer chandeliers for a striking sculptural effect. For a classic mood, an original chandelier in crystal or cut glass will bring a sophisticated touch.

Installation and decor tips

Fitting an original chandelier requires solid fixing, suitable for the weight (2 to 15 kg depending on material). Use expansion anchors for plasterboard ceilings, or screw hooks for concrete ceilings. Check compatibility with LED bulbs (E27, G9, GU10 depending on model) for energy efficiency.

For a gallery feel, layer lighting by pairing your original chandelier with designer wall lights or unique pendant lights in the same room. Always harmonise colour temperatures (3000K for soft, 4000K for brighter light) to avoid harsh contrasts.

Maintenance depends on the material: metal cleans with a dry cloth, glass with a specialist streak-free cleaner, wood with a soft feather duster. For intricate models, remove detachable parts once a year for a deep clean. Regular care keeps your chandelier shining and ensures optimal light diffusion.
