Which bar lights are best for your style and materials?

Industrial pendants: Ideal for a bar with a loft or workshop vibe, these available in black metal, brushed steel or copper, often with wide shades (25–40 cm diameter) and exposed textile cables. Choose a power of 8–12W LED per light point for effective illumination without excess heat. Industrial pendants pair beautifully with wood or concrete worktops.

Designer ceiling lights: For a modern bar, designer ceiling fixtures offer a slim and eye-catching alternative. Anodised aluminium or mouth-blown glass models provide even light, perfect where headroom is limited (below 2.4 m). Some designer

How high and how powerful should bar lights be installed?

Mounting height determines both visual comfort and efficiency. For a pendant, leave 75–90 cm between the light and bar top for clear views and access. As for brightness, aim for 300–500 lumens per metre of bar—so for a 150 cm counter, a 2 x 8W LED pendant (about 1600 lumens) is ideal. In an open kitchen, bar lighting should complement general lighting without creating shadows. Combine it with kitchen pendant lights for a visually cohesive and well-balanced scheme. If the bar is also a dining space, select a 3000K colour temperature for natural-looking food and a welcoming feel.

How to coordinate your bar lighting with the rest of your decor?

Choose bar lighting with your room’s existing materials and colours in mind. Solid wood bars work well with black or copper metal pendants, while marble or quartz counters often pair best with brass or frosted glass. For a graphic effect, try several small pendants (15–20 cm diameter) spaced 30–40 cm apart, or a linear track 80–120 cm long. Hand-blown glass or crystal designs bring sophistication, especially to open-plan spaces adjoining the living room.

For warmth, pair your bar lighting with wooden lighting or other natural touches. Light wood or bamboo shades gently diffuse light and soften the contrast with stone surfaces. To emphasise a cosy vibe, consider LED filament bulbs, which emit a soft golden glow (2200–2700K) and are energy efficient.

Finally, in a contemporary interior, bar lighting can echo designer lighting with clean lines and innovative materials such as brushed aluminium, tinted glass or satin brass. The key is consistent style and finish between your bar lighting and the rest of your lights, avoiding a patchwork effect.
