A bedroom chandelier is the centrepiece that shapes the space and sets the mood as soon as you enter the room.

The chandelier does more than just light up the bedroom: it defines the style, balances the overall light and can even make the room feel more spacious. Choose one that offers an even, shadow-free glow, while making a stylish decorative statement. Compact chandeliers (30-40 cm in diameter) work perfectly for rooms under 12 m², while larger models (50-70 cm) suit master bedrooms or suites. Ceiling height matters: a bedroom chandelier should provide at least 210 cm of clearance, which often means a total height (including suspension) of less than 40 cm in most rooms. For the main lighting, aim for 1000 to 2000 lumens, usually delivered by 2 or 3 LED bulbs of 7 to 10W each, in a warm white (2700 to 3000K) to maintain a restful atmosphere.

The best materials for bedroom chandeliers

Fabric chandeliers: These soften the light, creating a gentle glow that avoids glare. Cotton or linen models with diffusers provide the perfect relaxing ambience. Look for dust-resistant fabrics for easier upkeep, or washable fabric designs for children’s bedrooms.

Crystal chandeliers: They bring elegant sparkle, but take care to use the right bulb strength to avoid harsh reflections. A 40 cm crystal chandelier with dimmable LEDs lets you adjust the brightness throughout the day. Clean regularly with a microfibre cloth to keep it gleaming.

Wooden chandeliers: These add warmth and suit Scandinavian or natural-style bedrooms. Treated solid wood ensures long-lasting quality, and openwork designs help prevent a heavy look on the ceiling by letting light shine through.

Designer chandeliers: Geometric shapes and finishes in brass or matt black suit modern bedrooms. Some models feature built-in LEDs (12-18W, 1200-1800 lumens) for a sleek look with hidden bulbs.

What size and brightness for a bedroom chandelier?

The right diameter depends on your room size. In a 10-12 m² bedroom, a chandelier of 30-40 cm is sufficient. For rooms over 15 m², go up to 60 cm or beyond for a striking effect. A quick guide: chandelier diameter (cm) ≈ room width (m) × 8. For example, a 3.5 m wide bedroom calls for a chandelier at least 28 cm across.

In terms of light output, aim for 80 to 100 lumens per m². For a 12 m² bedroom, 1000 to 1200 lumens is ideal. Integrated LED designs provide even light and are economical (10-15W is enough). For bedrooms with a reading nook or dressing area, add bedroom wall lights to adjust lighting to your needs.

Mounting height is key: in a standard bedroom (250 cm ceiling), the lowest point of the chandelier should be between 210 and 220 cm from the floor. For higher ceilings, you can hang it down to 200 cm, but never lower to avoid bumps. Flat or semi-flush fittings are best for loft bedrooms or those with lower ceilings.

Modern chandeliers: Sleek lines and metallic materials suit minimalist or urban bedrooms. Integrated LED models with concealed bulbs provide a contemporary look and soft, even lighting.

Scandi chandeliers: Pale wood and soft curves work perfectly with natural textiles and pastel colours. A 40 cm Scandinavian chandelier with an E27 LED bulb gives a warm feel without overpowering the space.

Glass chandeliers: These maximise light, ideal for north-facing or darker bedrooms. Opal or frosted glass prevents glare and softens the effect.

For a child’s bedroom, choose an children’s chandelier with fun shapes, unbreakable materials, and gentle or colourful designs. Polypropylene or washable fabric options are durable and easy to care for.

Finally, for an intimate atmosphere, pair your bedroom chandelier with bedside lamps to create different zones of light — perfect for reading or relaxing without lighting the whole room.
