Lighting is never just a detail in your home — it's what brings every other element to life.

The right lighting fixture can transform an ordinary room into a welcoming space. It shapes the look and feel, creates zones of intimacy, highlights textures and colours, and sets an atmosphere that furniture and paint alone can't achieve. Yet lighting is often considered last, treated as a technical constraint rather than a decorative tool. This is a costly mistake: a poorly lit room is never truly inviting, no matter how beautiful the furniture or finishes. At Lumeers, lighting is at the heart of everything we do. The main lighting types and their roles

Well-designed lighting never relies on a single source. Layering several types of lighting at different heights and intensities creates a richer, more flexible atmosphere.

Pendant lights and chandeliers are the main focal points, defining a room’s look from above. A pendant over the dining table carves out a warm, inviting zone. A chandelier adds height and presence to a living room. These fittings are always decorative — essential to the space’s design, even when switched off.

Wall lights create pools of soft light along the walls, avoiding the flat look of a single central ceiling light. In the bedroom, matching wall lights each side of the bed are the perfect alternative to bedside lamps — freeing up space and providing comfortable light for reading. In hallways or on stairs, they guide you with gentle, even light.

Ceiling lights are the most versatile option — providing full-room light from above without taking up floor or table space. Their subtle look makes them ideal for kids’ rooms, offices, hallways and anywhere that needs practical, glare-free general lighting.

Floor lamps bring focused light at ground or mid-height. Placed by a sofa or reading chair, a floor lamp creates a cosy pool of light independent of the rest of the room — an inviting little oasis. Uplighter floor lamps bathe the ceiling in soft, indirect light for gentle ambience without glare.

Table and desk lamps are the most personal pieces. On a sideboard, desk or bedside table, they bring eye-level light and extra warmth in a way ceiling fixtures can’t. From linen shades to hand-finished ceramic bases or brass stands, these lamps are decorative objects in their own right.

How to create balanced lighting in any room

The three-layer lighting rule is the foundation of good interior lighting. Ideally, each room should have three types of light: general lighting (ceiling light, chandelier, pendant), ambient lighting (wall lights, floor lamps, LED strips) and task lighting (kitchen spotlights, desk lamps, bedside wall lights). The right mix allows you to tailor the atmosphere — crisp light in the morning, cosy ambience in the evening, directional light when you need to focus.

A common mistake in the living room is relying on a single overhead fitting, giving flat, cold light that kills the mood. Layer in an indirect floor lamp, a couple of small table lamps, and maybe an LED strip behind the TV unit — and the whole room feels transformed, no new furniture required.

In the kitchen, task lighting is essential: LED spotlights fitted or track-mounted above worktops, and under-cabinet strips for direct task light. But a striking ceiling light over the island or dining table transforms the kitchen from purely practical to truly inviting.

In the bedroom, avoid just a single central ceiling light which forces you to blast the whole room with harsh light. Instead, combine dimmable bedside wall lights, a subtle ceiling fixture or a statement chandelier, and perhaps a floor lamp for reading. A dimmer switch is a must-have for bedrooms — letting you move from bright functional light to soft mood lighting in seconds, all with the same fitting.

Colour temperature, brightness and LED compatibility: the technical basics

Bulb colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and influences the feel of a room even more than brightness. Below 3000 K gives a warm, golden glow — ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and relaxing spaces. 3000 to 4000 K is a versatile neutral white — great for kitchens and bathrooms. Above 4000 K the light is bright and cool — best for task areas, but not for living spaces.

LED compatibility is now standard for our entire range. LED has overtaken incandescent and halogen for every domestic use — it’s more efficient, longer-lasting, and comes in all colour temperatures and fittings. Most of our lights fit E27, E14 or GU10 LED bulbs. Where a dimmer is used, be sure your LED bulbs are marked 'dimmable' — not all LEDs are.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is another key factor, especially in rooms where authentic colours matter — living rooms, dining rooms, dressing areas. Over 90 CRI means colours look true and vibrant under artificial light. Below 80 CRI, colours can appear dull or inaccurate — a detail that makes a big difference to your home.
