A beautiful plate transforms how a meal is experienced. Chefs have always known it — even if guests rarely put it into words.

There is a real difference between eating from any old plate and from a plate that’s been carefully chosen. It doesn’t change the taste, but it does change the dining experience, the attention you give it, and the pleasure you take in it. A handmade ceramic plate with slightly irregular edges and a unique glaze can turn an ordinary dinner into something special. It’s a detail, yes — but details matter as much as the recipe. Stoneware, porcelain, earthenware or melamine: which plate material is right for you?

The material is your first decision — it sets the feel of your tableware and how well it suits your style.

Stoneware is the classic artisan’s choice. Thicker and heavier than porcelain, it handles everyday knocks well while bringing an earthy, raw elegance. Stoneware glazes are often reactive, with colour variations, so no two plates are identical. That’s exactly the charm. Most non-artisanal stoneware is dishwasher safe, but especially delicate pieces should be hand washed to protect their glaze. Depending on the model it may go in the oven or microwave — always check manufacturer instructions.

Porcelain feels finer, lighter, and more translucent. This is the material for formal tableware, perfect for special occasions. A classic white porcelain plate with a gold rim never goes out of style. Porcelain is also very durable despite its delicate appearance — generally more resistant than earthenware. It can withstand the high temperatures of the dishwasher and oven (as long as there are no metallic details).

Earthenware is more porous than stoneware and porcelain, and its glaze is more susceptible to chipping. It’s often found in Provençal, Mediterranean, or rustic styles — handmade decorations, colourful patterns and slightly chunky rims. Earthenware needs a bit more care but brings a warmth and authenticity that finer materials sometimes lack.

Melamine is the go-to for unbreakable plates — great for outdoor dining, picnics, or families with young children. It won’t break easily, resists scratches and is simple to clean. Melamine isn’t suitable for microwaves or ovens, but for a terrace lunch or garden party, it’s practical and stylish. Our melamine designs echo the aesthetics of our ceramics, with botanical prints, graphic designs and natural tones — so you don’t sacrifice style for durability.

Flat plate, soup plate or dessert plate: how to build your tableware set?

A basic set includes at least three types: the dinner plate for main courses (usually 26–28 cm diameter), the deep plate for soups, saucy dishes or pasta (22–24 cm diameter, 3–5 cm deep), and the smaller dessert plate (19–22 cm diameter, also useful for starters and cheese).

Today, many people move away from matching sets in favour of a mixed table — several styles united by colour, finish or overall look. Flat stoneware dinner plates in grey, deep beige soup plates and dessert plates with botanical patterns all from the same palette create an effect more visually appealing than a perfectly matched set. This 'mix and match' approach is now at the heart of contemporary table styling, freeing you from sticking to a strict set of twelve.

A few tips for a successful mix: stick to two or three different materials, keep the tones consistent (don’t mix black-and-white with terracotta-orange), and look for a shared detail — maybe all your plates have a gently irregular edge, or all feature a matt glaze.

Patterns and colours: which plate for which table?

The plain plate — matt white, beige, grey, terracotta, sage green, midnight blue — is the most versatile. It lets your food shine and pairs with any table runner, tablecloth or placemats. It’s perfect if you like to switch up your table’s look with the seasons.

The patterned plate — florals, leaves, Japanese-inspired or geometric motifs — makes a statement and instantly personalises your table. Pair them with plain linens to avoid visual overload. One bold patterned plate can be decoration enough, with the rest of your table setting kept simple.

The rimmed plate — a gold edge, black line or coloured border — is halfway between the two. It adds character without a full-on pattern. A gold rim on white makes a plate that’s at home both for everyday meals and special dinners.
