How to choose the right brightness and installation height for staircase lighting?

The brightness you need depends on the size of the staircase and wall colour. For a 4–6 m² staircase, allow for 400–800 lumens across several fittings. Light walls reflect brightness, so you may need less power, whereas dark walls will require brighter lighting. Ideally, wall lights are installed 90 cm from the step edge, and recessed spots 15–20 cm above each tread to avoid glare. For pendants, allow at least 210 cm clear headroom for safe access, especially in busy staircases.

For winder or spiral stairs, use multiple light points to prevent shadows. A dimmable staircase light lets you adjust brightness for different times of day or night-time use.

What styles and materials are best for staircase lighting?

Designer lighting: Clean lines and finishes in brushed brass or matte black are ideal for contemporary stairs. Lights in opal glass or perforated metal cast an even glow and prevent harsh shadows.

Wood lighting: For an oak or beech staircase, a wooden fitting adds warmth and visual continuity. Choose wall or pendant lights in solid, moisture-treated wood with an oiled or varnished finish for easy care.

LED lighting: Essential for heavy use, offering 25,000–50,000 hours of life and low energy. Motion sensor models are great for stairs, as they turn off automatically for safety and convenience.

For easy care, pick staircase lighting with smooth, accessible surfaces, especially for high-traffic areas. Dust monthly and use a damp sponge to keep glass or metal clear. Avoid porous or matte finishes for outdoor stairs, as these show dirt more easily.
