Hallway lighting is the first impression your interior makes for guests and residents alike.

Hall lights shape the space from the moment you enter, highlighting the layout and features while ensuring smooth movement through the hallway. In this busy area, lighting must be both practical and stylish, with the right fixture format for low ceilings, narrow corridors or spacious entrance halls. Compact ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall lights or adjustable spotlights: each hallway light meets a specific need, from a simple 2 m² entrance to an impressive high-ceilinged foyer. The ideal colour temperature is between 2700 and 3500 K for a warm welcome, and a brightness of 800–1500 lumens is usually enough for a 4–8 m² space. To see true colours, especially when checking your outfit or picking accessories, choose lamps with a colour rendering index (CRI) above 80.

What types of lighting are best for the hallway?

Ceiling lights: The most popular choice for hallways, especially where ceiling height is under 2.4 m. Opt for a diameter of 25–40 cm for standard spaces, with LED power between 10 and 18 W (the equivalent of 60 to 120 W for halogen). Ultra-slim models (less than 10 cm deep) avoid getting in the way as you pass. Opal diffusers create an even glow, with no harsh shadows on floors or walls.

Wall lights: Wall lights are ideal for narrow halls or corridors, spreading the light out without taking up floor space. Fit them at 160–170 cm from the ground to prevent glare. Adjustable or up/down wall lights offer an attractive pathway of light. For a corridor 3–5 m long, 400–600 lumens per wall light is sufficient to create a rhythm along the route.

Pendant lights: When the hallway has a ceiling over 2.7 m, a pendant light can serve as a striking focal point. Make sure to leave at least 210 cm of clearance below. Glass or metal pendants, 30–50 cm in diameter, bring character and spread light throughout the entrance. For a statement look, cluster several pendants 30–40 cm apart for a graphic effect.

Spotlights: Recessed or track spotlights suit modern hallways or long corridors. Angle them towards pathways or decorative features like mirrors or consoles. An LED spotlight of 5–7 W (400–600 lumens) every 1.5–2 m ensures even coverage with no dark patches.

How to choose the right brightness and colour temperature for hall lighting?

The brightness required depends on the size and wall colour. For a light-coloured 4 m² hallway, a 1000 lumen ceiling light will work; for darker walls or open spaces leading onto stairs, increase to 1500 lumens. For a welcoming atmosphere, choose a colour temperature of 3000 K—neither too yellow nor too cool. LED bulbs provide excellent efficiency (up to 100 lm/W) and last over 20,000 hours for minimal maintenance. In spaces without natural light, pick a high CRI (90+) to avoid washed-out skin tones or distorted colours.

For hallways with mirrors, avoid extremely directional lights that cast harsh facial shadows. Opt for wide diffusers or indirect wall lights instead. In large entrances, mix multiple light sources—for example a central ceiling light and two wall lights—for balanced illumination.

Which materials and styles are best for hallway lighting?

Designer ceiling lights: Modern materials like lacquered metal, blown glass or brushed aluminium suit contemporary entrances. Geometric shapes (square, disc, tube) work well in minimal interiors. A designer ceiling light of 30 cm diameter, in black or gold, looks smart with minimalist furniture.

Wood ceiling lights: For a warm or Scandinavian vibe, light woods (oak, birch) or dark woods (walnut) create a natural touch. Openwork designs diffuse a soft light—ideal for smaller areas. Pair a 25–35 cm wood ceiling light with a hallway bench or wooden-framed mirror for a harmonious effect.

Glass pendant lights: Opal or smoked glass provides a soft glow without glare. Blown glass pendants, 20–40 cm in diameter, are perfect for traditional or Art Deco entrances. Style them with brass door handles or boldly patterned floor tiles for a cohesive look.

Metal wall lights: Chrome, brushed brass or matt black finishes blend with industrial or modern decor. Choose IP20 fittings for dry interiors, or IP44 for entrances facing directly onto the street or garage.

To keep your hallway lighting pristine, dust the diffusers regularly and remove fingerprints from glass or metal. Integrated LED hallway lights need no bulb change—just pick a trusted brand to ensure the longest module lifespan.
