Vintage table lamps : faites le bon choix

Vintage lighting is the touch that gives any room an effortlessly timeless feel.

A vintage table lamp is a statement choice for those who value both character and practicality. Whether you prefer a patinated brass table lamp, a 1950s-style articulated design or a desk lamp with a telescopic arm, each piece has its own distinctive personality. The shapes are varied—from tulip-shaped opal glass shades and colourful glazed ceramic bases to chrome or brushed brass frames. Sizes range from small bedside lamps (25 to 40 cm high, shade diameter 12 to 20 cm) to striking table lamps up to 60 cm high. A vintage lamp isn’t just decorative: it structures a space, sets the mood and meets specific lighting needs, from a cosy reading nook to a home workspace.

What materials and shapes define a truly authentic vintage table lamp?

Opal glass: a key feature of vintage lamps, it diffuses soft, even light—perfect for bedrooms or living rooms. A globe in opal glass, 18 cm diameter, will provide 400 to 600 lumens with a 6 to 8 W LED bulb, ideal for the bedside.

Brass and chrome metal: these give lamps an industrial or Art Deco look. Aged brass, often used for articulated arms, takes E27 bulbs up to 40 W. For a desk, pick a vintage metal lamp with an adjustable reflector, 35 to 50 cm high, for focused, glare-free lighting.

Glazed ceramic: lending a colourful, retro touch, especially with 1960s and 70s designs. A 30 cm high ceramic base with a fabric shade offers a warm glow (colour temperature 2700 to 3000 K).

If you love the style of classic vintage pendant lights, take a look at our vintage pendant lighting collection: tulip shapes, globes and enamelled domes, generally 20 to 40 cm in diameter, perfect above a table or kitchen island.

Which vintage table lamp is right for each room?

The best vintage lamp for you depends on the space and its purpose. In the bedroom, a vintage bedside table lamp with a fabric or glass shade, 30 to 40 cm high, recommended 4 to 6 W LED (300 to 500 lumens), creates a relaxing mood for winding down. For your desk, choose a vintage articulated lamp with a 40 to 60 cm arm, adjustable head, E27 bulb of 8 to 12 W (700 to 1000 lumens), and a neutral colour temperature (3000 to 3500 K) to help prevent eyestrain.

In the living room, a large vintage table lamp (50 to 60 cm high, 25 to 35 cm shade) is perfect for illuminating a reading corner or highlighting a sideboard. For a bold retro statement, pair it with a vintage floor lamp: tripod, arc or tube styles, 140 to 170 cm high, up to 15 W LED to light an area of 10 to 15 m².

For lovers of refined details, the vintage bedside lamp stands out with its finishes: pull chain switch, marble base or pleated shade. A compact model (28 cm high, 12 cm base) fits neatly on a slim table.

How do you coordinate a vintage table lamp with the rest of your decor?

A vintage lamp can work in both classic and contemporary interiors if you echo its materials and colours elsewhere in your scheme. A model in aged brass pairs beautifully with vintage wall lights to create a visual link in a living room or hallway. For a more authentic look—and lower energy use—choose LED filament bulbs (4 to 8 W, 2700 K).

For industrial style, match a black or chrome vintage lamp to raw wood furniture or vintage ceiling lights. Prefer pastel ceramic or coloured glass lamps for bohemian or Scandi décor, teamed with natural fabrics and rattan accessories.

Care depends on materials: dust glass and ceramic regularly with a soft cloth, use a suitable polish for brass, and always check cables on older models. Crucially, check that your lamp is compatible with modern LED bulbs to keep that vintage look while benefiting from energy-efficient performance.
